G'day from Australia!
Posted by MattB on Monday, January 2, 2012 5:16 PM

Hi everyone! I was a very keen modeller in my youth, then stopped for quite some time, and recently took it back up again. I have two small kids (6 and 4), and my wife has banished my modelling activities to our uninsulated but new and large detached shed/mancave. Any thoughts or advice on things like suitability of the shed for building and storing models - both in the box and when completed - will be very gratefully received. (I've got some old bookcases and such ready to cover with clear acylic sheets as storage for the built ones, and have the unbuilt ones stored on large see-through plastic tubs with clip-tight lids).

I've just bought a Paasche VLS - my first airbrush - and will shortly be taking the first steps down that path. I'd got about as far as I could with normal paintbrushes - definitely needed to make the step up. Combining this with the (also recent) discovery of photo-etch and resin interior detail, I hope the future looks bright.

I'm 43, work full-time and am hoping to encourage my 6 y.o. son to follow in my modelling footsteps. He certainly shows interest in the built ones, and occasionally in the building activities themselves.

Looking forward to hearing from you and participating in future discussions.

Cheers,

Matt.

G'day Matt from the two headed amongst us. First of all let me wecome to you the forums, second you have my condolances to being banished to the shed, Canberra can be even colder than Hobart in winter. There are a few guys on the forums that do manage to model during the colder times in their sheds they be forth comming with the tips (maybe start a topic in the general modeling section).

May I ask the reason for the banishment, Smell? Mess? Other? I have kids from 4 to 12 and my wonderful SWMBO lets me model inside on the proviso I keep the enamel paints closed until everyone is out or in bed (she even usues my airbrush for her crafts/scrapping) and keep my area vacc'd from small/sharp pieces (up until last month my model desk was in the lounge).

First off, welcome!  As a new arrival to the forums myself, let me say you would be hard pressed to find a friendlier bunch of people than here.

Secondly, being on the other side of the world, I wonder what temperature range you experience (in Fahrenheit if possible).  Cold is going to adversely affect your paints, glues and other chemicals.  While heat could risk the possibility of warping plastic kit parts.

And lastly, what sort of subjects will you be building?

Best of luck

Mike

Welcome Sign  The pieces are sealed in the box, but there is a miraculous feeling of the model being there, invisible, illuminated by the crafter’s imagination, and clamoring to become visible.

Occasional factual, grammatical, or spelling variations are inherent to this thesis and should not be considered as defects, as they enhance the individuality and character of this document.

Hi Andrew - well, the banishment results from our living in a fairly small house, mostly, and the smell of various paints, thinners, etc tends to - well, I was going to say get up her nose but that's being silly.Wink

I think I can negotiate storing paints and weather-affected thinners/chemicals somewhere safe inside the house. But setting up the spray booth - I think that needs to be done in the shed. That said, I intend to use mostly acrylics (which I've already started buying), which should cut down on the smell factor, and cleaning chemicals should also be less smelly.

Hi Mike - Canberra tends to have pretty cold winters and hot summers - say 100 degs F in summer and its not uncommon to get down to about 10 degs F in winter. I think I can negotiate storing weather-affected paints/glues/chemicals inside the house, though - I have a storage nook that is more temperature-neutral.

I have mostly 1/72 scale kits - but also some 1/35 scale vehicles. In fact, I have quite a lot of kits to build - I accumulated over a hundred on a posting to the USA, where the online model world is completely different to that here in Oz. Kits much cheaper, and shipping also much cheaper.

Hello Matt.

Sounds like your temperatures are very similar to what we have here in Pennsylvania.  Right now I guess your having close to ideal conditions to be working outdoors.  As long as you keep paints and glues tightly sealed and away from the kids, you shouldn't have too much problem storing them indoors (possibly locked in a box?). I guess one upside of being divorced is that I don't have to worry about where and when I model (lol).

So, any particular genre of models, or going for a little bit of everything and anything?  I gave up on 1/72 years ago, the eyes just don't see those little things as well as they used to.  Now it's strictly 1/35 WWII armor, enough variety to keep me going for many a year to come.

Well big day, going to LHS (Local Hobby Shop) later. Picking up supplies and will try not to add to the to-do pile of models (very hard).

Happy modeling

Mike

Welcome Matt........   glad to have you with us.

Banishment can sometimes be a plus....  as stated, keep your paints, glues, thinners away from extreme temps and you should be ok. One other thought are your decals. If possible, move them to a more climate controlled enviroment.

Will be looking for some photo postings!

All the best

Bill

Enjoy the ride!
