A Little History
Posted by nostrdav on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 5:06 PM
I am glad that someone else asked that question about being labeled a snap-together! Now, I don't have to ask the obvious question. Well done.

I have no idea what a snap-together is. I have just recently gotten back into assembling plastic models for fun and relaxation. I did it a lot when I was a kid back in the 60's with my Dad who was a WWII vet from the Air Force in North Africa and Italy. And guess what? I still have all those models we built back then. There are hundreds of them that I brought back to Wyoming recently from Massachusetts after my Dad died. Some of them are actually pretty nice. We really got into it in terms of detail and accuracy of marking for specific pilots. But, that is what did it. Now, it appears I am hooked again. I also have boxes and boxes of unassembled ones from that era. Any thoughts on the viability of old decals?

I will be very curious to see how the techniques have changed. But regardless, the smell of the paint and the glue brings back good memories. It is probably the glue sniffing thing that explains everything.

This forum is cool and if nothing else has changed since the 60's, it appears the internet age is making communication among modelers a real plus. I think I am going to enjoy this.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome back to this wonderful hobby, nostrdav ! We have quite a few things in common. I returned to the hobby 10 years ago, after building models in the 60s. My father was also in the USAAF, flying B-24s in North Africa, and P-51s in Italy. I currently live in Massachusetts.

The biggest changes in the hobby were the introduction of resin & photo etched parts. Kit accuracy & detail have also skyrocketed (along with the price !). And then there's Future (yes, the floor polish. An indispensible modeling tool today)

Peruse the techniques section, there is a lot of information there.

Have fun & enjoy the site !

Hey everybody; Thanks for the replies. It is good to find people with similar interests and backgrounds.

What/where/who is a good source for decals? Some of these old kits I have are probably rather obscure. Some were made by my Dad before I even remember and are some crude but interesting 1950's kits. Pogo planes, cold war jets of odd scales, Russian jets, odd scale WWII planes molded in red or blue plastic. But there is some good stuff that the decals are peeling off or cracking and flaking.

Any suggestions or links are welcome.
