new and learning modeler

Hey Alex, I have a son who is going into 7th grade.  He is on his 10th kit this year.  He's been asking to join in the forum.  I am new here too.  I plan to check it out make sure its not too rowdy then I will  bring him in.  Good to see there are young people here.   A good sign for sure.

I hope you post some pictures soon.  I would very like to see your work.

Welcome aboard Alex!  I know Testors used to sell a basic airbrush set. (Well, spray-gun might be a better description!) I used it for quite awhile - it was a great starter, and was quite capable of spraying an all-over colour. I still have it!

I am sure he will be fine. We do have our moments, but for the most part its very light hearted with the odd looney moment thrown in.

Alex. welcome to FSM and modelling.  This is a good place to start.  A nice friendly group.  Harbor Freight has a dual action airbrush for $18.  Some of the guys in my club have turned out some spectacular results with it.  You can all set up for under $100.  Not bad when guys are paying twice that for just the AB alone

Rowdy?  This forum? FSM professes a family oriented forum, and pretty much keeps it that way.

Everybody's got their own ideas about what makes a good airbrush. If you're not familiar with some of the different options available, it's a good idea to do some research and read some reviews to get an idea what features appeal to you, and which might not fit with your situation. Don Wheeler, who's a member here, has a nice website with some very useful info and reviews:

No matter what airbrush you end up with, practice is the most important thing. Get a good grasp of the basics first, then expand from there. Like anything else, theres a learning curve. I've been airbrushing since the '70s, and I'm still picking up new and useful techniques here and there.

This forum's a great place for asking questions. Feel free to take advantage of other's experience, it can save you a lot of confusion as you go forward.

and just remember there are modelers out there that have used a brush for years and years, with good results.   So enjoy your builds and get equipment as time and money permit.

This set here is about $20 U.S. and extremely good for beginners. I still use mine for big single color applications. I wouldn't reccomend a dual action until you're comfortable with the A220. Then you can upgrade to the A270.Yes I'm biased toward Aztek equipment. I find them easy to use and easier to clean than any of the Badgers I've owned. In the mean time if you're tired of hand brushing look in to using spray cans. Some might disagree but my order of learning would be to start with the rattle cans until you get the feel of spraying paint then move to a single action then dual action.

Speaking of Harbor Freight, I have one of their $80 compressors, and it's been working fine for me right along.
