Greg,

Thanks for the help. I will surely need it when I attempt to brush and wash my tank.

I have always used Testors/ Model Master Enamels.  I think that I will go with a pre-mixed wash for my first go.

Thanks again

Brian

Welcome aboard, Brian. Always good to have another voice in the conversation.

You didn't mention any paint preferences. I generally use enamels for drybrushing, since they are slower-setting than acrylics and easier to use without pulling up flakes of what you just put down. For washes, there are a lot of pre-mixed aftermarket products out there, but I make my own with the "sludge-wash" technique. I add a drop or two of water and an equal amount of dishwashing or liquid hand soap to acrylic paint, then brush it on over a glossy or gloss-coated surface, letting it run into cracks and crevices and around detail. When dry (and it dries pretty fast in small amounts) I gently rub away the excess with a clean cotton bud/Q-tip. The soap content usually lets the unwanted wash come up pretty easily, but you can moisten the Q-tip as necessary for stubborn bits.

Two cautions on the wash: some new formulas of liquid soaps have "anti-bacterial" additives that may affect some acrylic paints, so test a small amount first before you commit to a bigger sample. The second (learned the hard way) is to be careful overcoating the soap/wash mixture. I usually seal mine (once completely dry) with Future before applying a clear flat (acrylic) final coat--a few times I forgot, and the acrylic flat coat turned chalky white over the soap wash areas. If you overcoat with non-acrylic topcoats, I suppose it wouldn't be a problem.

Once again, glad to have you with us!

Cheers

Greg

Welcome Sign  It is by will alone I set my models. It is by the juice of Cyanoacrylate that thoughts acquire speed, accelerators acquires speed the curing process, the tack become a warning. It is by CA alone I set my models permanent.

Hello everyone.

My name is Brian.

I have always done models or some sort of creative construction since i was 10 years old.

As for many others, the daily grind puts things on hold sometimes.

My ol my how things have have changed in todays world (34 now).

It is a very different world out there now....thank you internet.

I have recently started a Academy -M1A1, Abrahms ,2003 Tank to get back in the swing of things.....pics to come later.

I am looking forward to some new ( to me) techniques such as drybrushing and washing..ANY GOOD COLOR IDEAS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED Ya'll.

Some works in progress are  as follows:

I am working on an 8-horse hitch Budweiser model with wagon ,  M1A1 Tank,  Matchitecture- Eiffel Tower model,  "D"engine and above model rockets,  Model railroad Diaroma,  and  I have a Consructo Mayflower wooden model ship that I hope to start this fall.   Projects started are 60-90% done .

I am about to renew my subscription to F.S.M.  and wanted to start taking advantage of all that it has to offer with this great website.

Happy modeling to all and lets keep seeing those pics.

Brian
