Welcome to the forum.

I'll chime in here on your paint question.  I think the example you used means to mix the two colors, then apply.

Having said that, I'm not a fan of mixing--since it's hard to match the color again, if you need to make more.

Seeing that you are doing a Corsair, there are out-of-the-bottle colors available that should fit your need, since Navy aircraft colors were standardized (if you are doing US Navy).

You should be able to find what you need in acrylics or enamels.  Testors has a good selection in their Model Master lines.

Good luck.

“WAHAHAHAHAHHH!” (This has no particular meaning,
but it sure is fun to say with mouthful of paint.)

Welcome to the Forums Astral. There are lots of great guys, and gals, on here that are very knowledgeable and are ready, willing and able to help you with your questions and/or problems. Don't be afraid to go to the specific Forums with your questions. The people here don't bite. I'm not an expert on all these questions but I'll try to help you with some of them.

These new kits can be a little scary at first, but, as you get used to working with them, it will get easier. To answer your first question, an airbrush is not a must. There are lots of people on here that do not have an airbrush and only use rattle cans or the old standby the brush. I used rattle cans and brushes up until a few years ago. I'm just starting to get the feel of my airbrush and learning how to use it properly. It takes time.

On weathering. Start small with things like powder burns on the wings from the machine guns and exhaust smoke on the fuselage. Start with small things like these and work your way up to more complicated items. Slow and easy does it. You can always add more but it's hard to remove too much.

I'm not sure about your paint question. I think it means to mix the colors and then apply, but don't take my word for it. Go to the Paint Forum and ask that question. Someone there will help you that knows more than me.

There's no such thing as a stupid question. The way to learn is to ask. Hang in there and keep at it. Good Luck.

Hello new to the hobby

I have been browsing the forums for a few weeks now, just thought id say hello and see if I could get some sound advice and or direction.

I guess I am not entirely new to the hobby of model building but it certainly feels as if I am. I am familiar with the older revell car model kits from when I was a kid but the kits I am interested in now seem much more advanced and over my head.

I recently purchased the tamiya vought f4u-1a corsair. I love the detail but unsure if I can handle such a kit. I have already built the landing gear but I am hesitant to work on anything else. so Ill get to the question, is airbrushing ( i do not own an airbrush) a must when building these models OR can the good ole rattle can do?  also I definately do not feel confident on doing any weathering, is this something that is now the norm? I really want to do this kit justice.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

One more question regarding the paint codes, I noticed in the instructions it will mention 2 paint colours for one item. Example Xf-3 + Xf-5 does this mean to do 2 Coats (one of each color) or to blend the 2 and apply. I feel stupid asking but doesnt seem to say.

oh and love the site all the work I see on here is an inspiration.
