No worries. Anything to help another 72nd builder stay with the true faith.Wink

Use the rich formatting button.......I just saw your post in the other thread about that.  I'm slow and admit it! Stick out tongue.....but I'm teachable!

I posted in the Aircraft section, but noticed I need to work on how to make the pics larger.  Sorry about that.

Thanks Bish!

Thanks for info Bish.  I've been looking at Optivisors and saw another "cheaper" brand in the same catalog.  Wonder if that is the one you had.  Anyway, I'm thinking a set will be in my near future.  I don't want to shy away from the 1/72 scale stuff I have.  I have so many of them (due to an estate sale I hit), and there is some really great subjects in those 72's I have I don't want to let them go.

Thanks again fo rthe info!

ye, those are the ones. The first one i had had two lenses, you just flipped one down infront of the other. But that didn't last long. I got a new one a few months back, can't recall the brand, that has four lenses you just click in and out as needed. The one i use most of the time is the x1.8. I use the stronger ones now and again for very small stuff. Another important thing is light. I would suggest daylight builds, and a decent light set up really helps.

Bish, that is too funny.  I was just talking to an Air Force buddy of mine who is REALLY into modeling and he said the exact same thing about the optivisor!  I guess I'm in the market for a set.  Those are the ones you can change the lenses on right?  Which power would you suggest to start with?

Bobby, don't let the small size of 72nd get to you. I'm 43 and determined to keep at that scale. I better do, i have enough of them. When i came back into the hobby on 2008 after a 5 year break, i did notice my eyes would ache and it was harder to focus. So i got an optivisor, and now the thing is never off my head. So if its your eyesight that a problem, deffinatly get one of those.

Wow! Z Square 8, that is some nice work there!  Makes me want to pull out the Monogram biggies in my stash.  I've got 2 B-17's, B-24, B-29, B-36, and at least 2 C-47's!  Love them 47's!!!

Awesome work!

Roger that Z Square 8!  We have and will continue to overcome!

I hope to post some pics of the little darlings I did to get back into the swing of things this weekend.  1/72.....not a good scale for me now.  20 years ago maybe, not so much now! :)

No lurking....got it!  I had all intentions of starting to post when I first signed up, but it was shortly after that we got the news.  But hey, we are here now and ready to rock!

Thanks for the kind sentiments!  They are appreciated.

Welcome Eagle90...

I concur with the sentiments expressed already regarding your wife and her continued improvement!

Yep...throw up some of those pics. Would enjoy seeing them. My photography skills are better than my modeling skills...and if you happen to catch some of the images, well, that will tell you my skill level.

So, no shadow lurking...your 6 is clear.

Hey Jim (fox),

So you have been putting models together for a couple of years huh?!  :)

Everyone in my family supported my addiction as a kid.  If I didn't get 5-6 models every birthday and Christmas....I must have been bad!

I'm going to attempt to post some pics by this weekend.  I don't look to win any contests with my work as it is now, but man I do have fun with it.  I also look forward to helping here too.  I have lots of models and I see some need instructions sometimes.  Hopefully I can help at some point.  Thanks for the greeting and prayers.

I've never been to Can-Am Con, but every show has at least some vendors. The number and quality may vary depending on the size of the venue and the reputation of the show. We are fortunate to have a very large venue and a reputation that pleases both the vendors and the buyers. Our space, over 60 tables, is one of the largest, if not THE largest, vendor area in New Enlgand, sells out by the end of January.

Wow, sounds great!  Maybe I'll take some pics while I'm there.  Get a little more exposure to Vermont maybe.  I'm pretty excited about the show, can't wait to go!

Welcome to the Forums Eagle90. Glad to have you aboard. Glad your wife is doing well. We'll keep you both in our thoughts and prayers that she keeps doing well. My name is Jim and I am a plasticaholic. I love the smell of plastic in the mourning. I'm 72 and have been building since I was 6. My 2 uncles supplied my brother and I with models and supplies as my dad thought that it was a waste of time and money. You name it and we built it. The guys, and gals, on here like to see lots of pics of your builds. That will help them in answering any questions or problems that you might have. The shows are great but be careful when you look at the vendors tables. The temptation will be great. I never come home empty handed. Do enter the raffles. Lots of goodies can be had there. Enjoy the hobby.

Thanks ajlafleche!  Great contact info.  Plattsburg is not that far and they may even have a real hobby shop or two!  So this Can-Am, is it a pretty big show?  It says it is held at a school in Richmond.  I've never been to a show so I do not have anything to compare it to, but do you think there will any vendors there?  I'm hoping to buy a lot of stuff since there is no dedicated hobby shop in my area.  I'm hoping this show will be a one stop shopping for me! :)  Also, do people/vendors do any trading at these shows?  Thanks for the great info!

You'd be closest to IPMS/Champlain Valley which meets 2nd Thursday of the Month, 6:00pm, Tip Top Frame, 4161, Rt. 22, Plattsburg NY <frankandsandyb@verizon.net>.

They are the sponsors of Can-Am Con which stays pretty much in one place. The only "travelling" show in the region is Noreastcon, teh IPMS Region 1 Convention which can be held anywhere in New England and New York.

We have a few guys who come down tot  our show from the Plattsburg club. If you're interested, contact Frank at the email above and see if you can get a ride. Frank's a nice guy and a great modeler. If you do contact him, you can tell him Al LaFleche referred you.

There isor was another VT group, Upper Valley Modelers in the one of whose members in in North Farrisburg, but I can't find anything about them on the web. They may have dissolved.

tojo72, Thanks...and I have a lot to learn!  I can't wait to try out some of these techniques I have been reading about......Future!  Cool!  Hairspray!?  This I gotta try! :)

ajlafleche, You are about 4 hours away.  I'm in St. Albans, Vt.  close to the border!  I haven't done much research on any clubs around here.  Being Vermont I'm not holding to much hope...although there is a show coming up in April here in VT.  It is the CAN/AM CON 11.  I've been here for about 12 years and this is the first I have heard of it.  But, like I said, I just recently started to get proactive in modeling again.  I'm not sure if this is one of those shows that goes to different cities each year or what, but I will be there with C.C.'s, cash, and trade models (if they even do that at shows...many questions about shows too!)

I will definitely check out your website too!  Thanks again!

G-J, I plan on trying to post some this weekend.  I now work for the NWS (National Weather Service) and this time of year is very busy up here!  I work pretty late so I hope to give it a shot this weekend.  I did some 1/72 aircraft to get back in to the groove of things and found out I can't "see" the models the same way I used to! I can't focus up close and by the time I get done playing trombone to focus, it is too far away to see any detail.  So, I'm thinking 1/48 and larger are my friends! :)  Like I said earlier, my skill level is no where near what you guys are at, but it sure is fun getting back into the hobby.  I'm not as meticulous as a lot of folks are.  If the model is a close facsimile....I'm happy.  Although, I am finding myself researching subject matter so much more than I ever did.  Squadrons $1/$2 deals on Signal books is a great way to start a reference library!  I don't just grab grey and blue for a WW II Navy a/c, I find myself getting stopped at the painting point of building due to the fact I don't have the correct colors!  So, then I start another kit! :)

Thank you all for the kind greetings!

Welcome, fellow northeasterner. You don't say where in New England you are, but  If you're any where near Springfield MA. consider dropping by one of our meetings on the first Wednesday (hey, that's tomorrow as I write this!) of the month at the first Congregational Church at Park and Lathrop Streets in West Springfield at 7:00 pm. If you're further afield, please stop by our contest in Chicopee on the 24th. See our website for more details, www.wwmodelclub.org.

Thanks Bish.  I know, modeling and sanity in the same sentence, but think of what we would be like without modeling! :)  I did a couple of little 1/72 scale kits to get back into the groove of things (and try out about 5 different glues I bought!).  I might throw them on just to make sure I can post pics.  Thanks for the welcome!

checkmateking02, thanks for the kind words.  She is doing very well and we are believing it will be completely gone....soon!

And welcome to the forum from 'Olde' England. Gla dto have you hear, and good to hear your wife is doing well.

Just one thing. Models and Sanity. Not usually two words that go together often. Not around here anyway. Sounds like you have a nice stash to keep you going.

And we welcome photo's from all levels, so don't be shy.

Hello from New England
Posted by Eagle90 on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 10:32 AM

Well I decided it was time to start posting.  I know, I've been on the forum for a bit, but as soon as I retired from the Air Force and thought it was time to get back in to modeling (I was calling it my retirement package with as many models as I have acquired) my awesome wife was diagnosed with cancer.  The good news is she is doing very well and I have started to get back into modeling after a long time.

Now for my history (that seems to have a common theme).  Built models with my dad starting at 7 years old (will be 47 this year).  Not a Christmas or birthday without at least 5 models being had.  I built models faster then we produced aircraft during WW II!  And yes, the quality of those models expressed that fact.  Went in to the Air Force and took what I had with me.  Thanks to TMO, I lost, broke, or otherwise threw away most of them!  But, being PCS'd all over the world gave me the opportunity to keep buying models (my retirement remember).  So, between that and MANY cool "good deals", I have stored up over 260 plastic beauties to relax to.

I come to the forums often and I am completely blown away on the quality you guys and gals have on your builds!  I, on the other hand, am no where near the level most of you are at, so pics might be scarce. Embarrassed  I'm still getting caught up in the technology we have now....PE, all the aftermarket stuff, more paints than just Testors, plastic welders, not a tube of goo!  A lot to take in.

So there you have it, I'm back, spinning up to keep my sanity after putting the kids to bed (yes, I have 2, we were late bloomers when it cam to kids!)  I look forward to learning a lot from everyone and hopefully having some builds I won't be embarrassed to post.

Thanks for all the knowledge and advice I have gotten from you all thus far!
