Photos of specific IJN aircraft like that are exceptionally hard to come by. For the most part the photos taken, at least the ones usually published, were very generic- aircraft warmng up on deck, aircraft launching, aircraft landing. Although many were taken at historicly significant events, the Japanese did not record the moment like the US, British, or even the Germans did. At least not in film that has survived to today.

Lt Cdr Egusa's VAL at Pearl Harbor

I've seen FOUR different color profiles for the AICHI 99 VAL flown by Lt Cdr Takashige Egusa in the Pearl Harbor and/or Ceylon attacks. The mottled red pattern with thin yellow lines nick-named "ja-ja uma" (Profile 7 in OSPREY's "AICHI 99 KANBAKU VAL UNITS 1937-42") seems to be the MOST LIKELY profile for the P.H. attack but no photos exist of that aircraft.

Any comments???
