Glad to be here.

Retired and catching up is hard to do when out of the hobby for many years.

Picked the B-17G Chow Hound in 1/48 for first attempt. Having difficulty discerning the correct color for upper fuselage. Olive Drab, Flat Green? Flat Olive Drab looks too gray. Pictures appear brownish to a green brown.

Appreciate any and all suggestions.

Welcome to the Forum, Fred.

What you're seeing is probably the effect of fading OD on the actual plane.  The subject of OD is almost a never-ending discussion, complicated by the fact that the OD weathered extensively.

There are plenty of manufacturers producing OD model paint, all with their own variations.

If you can locate a color photo of a B-17, with a paint color that pleases you, maybe match that.  Years ago I built Chow Hound in 1/72, and don't recall finding any color photos of that particular plane, but there are plenty of color shots of other planes around.

Also note, that the USAAF olive drab (OD 41) is different from what army vehicles were painted in.

Here's a link to a previous discussion at FSM.

Good luck!

Thanks, sounds like the "chicken and egg" thing. Going with Olive Drab Testors Model Master in the "rattle" can. Can always re-paint if I don't like it. Now as for the chicken thingy,.........................

Welcome aboard. OD is a bit of a tricky subject. But guys like Check defiantly know what they are talking about. I think he has built enough B-17's to equip the 8th AAF.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
