Cassibill, I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I had never heard about those floating gardens. Well, Amsterdam is always a bit different isn't it? The other point you made is a good one: we always tend to take for granted what's right on our doorstep. That's probably why I take my best pictures abroad: when you see something for the first time, you really LOOK at it. Anyway, nice to see you and your mom are rebuilding a bit of Holland over on yonder side of the big pond.

They aren't big, just numerous. A simple wooden frame with a wire mesh box on the bottom. The plants sit in the box and the wood frame makes the thing float. They're usually the size of a desk and just float along the edges in the canals. I've heard on paleontologists filtering that way. I've even done that onc but the deepening the container so part of it is under water, that's new.
I know what you mean about pics. I've seen beautiful things in my own back yard but photograph it.. never. Cows wandering throught the dig site. I took 6! 15 rolls of film in a month in Europe and I've taken 3 1/2 in the 6 mths I've been home. Most of those have been of kittens, models, or inventory photos for my militaria and fossil collection.
I gues the song is right...
You blue might be gray, your less might be more
Your window to the world might be your own front door
Your shiniest day might come in the middle of the night
That’s just about right
