North Dakotan rediscovering modeling
Posted by schmidty on Sunday, December 15, 2013 7:30 PM

Hi everyone!

Like many, I modeled when I was younger and got away from it when I "grew up".  For years now I have been toying with the idea of getting back into it.  I decided now is the time; I need something to do inside during these frigid North Dakota winters that seem to get longer and colder as I get older!

I look forward to learning from all of you experienced modelers.  And I hope to hear from others in North Dakota...especially northeast ND! Smile

Welcome aboard schmidty. I see your diving right into the GB's. They are a great way to pick up tips and ideas. Look forward to seeing your build progress.

Thanks for the welcome Bish.  I wasn't sure if I should jump into GB's right away or not.  But like you said, I thought it would be a good way to learn.  Especially since both build topics are WWII related...that is my favorite era of history.  I'm sure the vast majority of my modeling will be on that topic.

Welcome Neighbor! North Dakotan myself, although I've since crossed the Red into MN now. Yes, very cold up here, prime modeling weather.

Welcome back to the hobby, and welcome to the forum!  Do you have any specific subjects that interest you, at this point?

One thing you've already learned--we all tend to get more bench time in, in our respective winters.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

The main reason I got back into the hobby (other than nostalgia and plain old fun) is growing up close to a US Air Force Base.  I would like to make a replica of every type of aircraft  that was stationed there.  When you grow up seeing B-52's on the ground and in the sky every time you drive by the base, it leaves an impression on you!  I love those BUFF's!

The base also had B-1B's for a short time and until recently, KC-135's.  And a small fighter presence for a while in the 60's and 70's.  Still have to do some research on those.  I know they did have T-33's because there is one on static display in the small town I live in.  They currently have Global Hawks there, so a UAV is in my future as well.

Another big part of the base's mission was Minuteman missiles.  I grew up literally surrounded by missile silos.  So I would like to model a Minuteman or two.  And if anyone ever produced a kit, I would love to model one of the Minuteman transport vehicles we often saw on the roads.

I also am very interested in WWII history.  I think I will model in that genre for a while while I hone my skills enough to tackle a B-52.  Plus I need to figure out where in the world I could display one!

The only thing stopping me building my BUFF is the lack of display space.

Must be taking about GFAFB? I know they had F-100 Voodoos stationed there in the 60s, 70s...

@ Bish: I am keeping my eye on that build.  I'm glad it has no end date because one day I will be in that one.  A BUFF is going to be my Holy Grail.

@Nathan:  Yep, I grew up about 30 miles west of GFAFB.  And today I live about 30 miles south.  Thanks for the heads-up on the F-100's!

Cool. Too bad GF has no local hobby shop anymore. I grew up about 70 miles SW of GF.

That's cool...it's nice to find another NoDak on here.  Even if you are in Minnesota now!  haha

Yeah, it sucks there's no LHS.  But a Hobby Lobby recently opened, and they have nearly one full isle of model kits and supplies.  So, that's better than nothing.  Although their 1:72 selection is awfully thin.  But, it's still much more than we've had for many years.
