Welcome to the Forums David! Glad to have you aboard! Sit back, have a few sips of your favorite beverage and enjoy the hobby. Almost forgot. We like to see lots of photos of your builds. That's what keeps us all happy.

Welcome aboard!
I'm only a new member myself and can honestly say that these forums are full of really helpful fellow modellers with fantastic tips and advice.
The best thing I ever did was join FSM forums

You guys are great for taking the time to reply! seriously speaking i was hoping to get sent to a website or something but never expected the full run down on the stuff you use and why.SO again many thanks for taking the time and for welcoming me in such a fine manner! I will be sure to post pics of it when it's done and by god it will be done! Big Smile

One other question if i may. Any recommended online modeling/hobby shops where i can purchase the materials? European ones would be preferable due to shipping costs and more importantly shiping time as im eager to get at building the Spit.

Welcome aboard David.

I would defiantly suggest a plastic weld rather than the old fashions glues. The one I use is EMA Plastic weld, which you should be able to get in Ireland. AS for paint, first thing you need to decide is Enamel or Acrylics. A lot of people tend to use one or the other.

Then you need to decide if you want accurate colours, which a number of companies do (my personal preference is xtracolor) Or you could go for a range like Humbrol or Tamiya which are not quite as specific, but more close enough.

You will defiantly find the hobby has changed. I only had a 5 year break starting in 2005 and I was surprised at how things had moved on. But don't feel afraid to ask about anything your not sure of.

But most of all, dive in and enjoy.

O ye, and post pics.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

David, first...Welcome to the forums, glad to have you on board!  Second...awesome story!  Great memories for you I'm sure, and now, they can live on!

As for materials, I hear you my friend!  I had a 20 year hiatus while in the Air Force.  I kept on buying kits but never put one together.  When I retired in 2010, man, what a world of difference the hobby was from the 70's-80's!  Never even heard on PE, or AM stuff.  The only glue we had was that god awful Testors stuff in the orange tube!  Ick!.  But now...the possibilities are almost endless!  Welcome to the new age!  As for your materials.  You will get 20 different answers!  My suggestion, get a FSM mag or another modeling mag you might have over there and see what is being used.  Then, if you have the funds, try everything once!  I bought 7 different glues and 3 different paints to try.  You will soon learn what is good for you and what your tastes are.  I personally use Ambroid ProWeld for glue.  Not sure you can even get it anymore.  Tenax 7R is just as good and a little easier to get.  Tamiya is a really good one also.  Those three are really hot and literally melt the plastic!  If you want something a little slower at first to work your skills, I got hooked on Faller Expert and Super Expert glues when I was stationed in Germany.  I can't tell the difference between the Expert and Super Expert myself, but the are slower to dry and more forgiving when it comes to mistakes. As for paints....another whole world you are talking about now.  Do you have an airbrush?  If not...GET ONE!!!!!!!!!  It will change your whole world my friend!  Seriously, you will not regret it!  So, if using an AB, I really like Tamiya paints.  You can almost just pour them into the AB and spray!  As for hand painting...I use Testors, Model Masters, and Vallejo paints mostly.  I'm trying to make a complete cross over to acrylics, but sometimes you just have to use an enamel!  Wink

So, there you have ONE opinion.  Like I said, you will get 20-30 more different ones......AND ALL ARE CORRECT!  Each person gets into the zone with one type of product and does awesome things with it, you just need to find "your" products!

Bottom line...HAVE FUN DOING IT!  Again...WELCOME!

Hi folks. I'm David and a little background on why i'm here. When i was younger i built maybe 30+ models all 1:48 scale and all WWII era. We had a small shop in ireland and my father would display my models from the ceiling of the shop hanging in that classic dog fighting pose or with the B17 and it's escort fighters and FW 190's swooping in from above Wink

He would buy me a model every month and eagerly await me finishing it and giving permission to display it hahaha good memories.

He died when i was 14 and sadly my model building died with him. 20 years later and this year my little brother bought me a Revell Spitfire Mk.XVI for christmas and all the memories came flooding back. Fantastic gift to be honest but now i'm completely shell shocked  and lost as a model builder. So i have come here to ask you good people for some advice when building this model. As far as construction goes im solid. but its the materials that have me lost.

So if there are any of you who could point me in the direction of the materials i will need to build it specifically the Best glue, and what paints i might need i would be more than grateful. the model is available to view here - http://www.revell.com/germany/aircraft/80-4661.html#.Us6XHJ5_tEU

Thanks a lot folks! And happy new year to you all.
