new scale modelers
Posted by BarrettDuke on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 8:37 PM

I have a hunch that we are going to see a large influx of scale modelers in the years to come. As the baby boomers retire, they are going to want to take up some things they used to love doing, and a lot of them were building models as young boys. I asked the owner of a Hobby Town in Raleigh today about the demographics of his model buyers. He opened his store 3 1/2 years ago. He said the biggest surprise he had when he opened his store was how many models he sold. He said he sells a lot of MM paint as well. He said because there is so much interest in the models, he expanded his offerings, and what he had was pretty impressive for a Hobby Town: Trumpeter, Dragon, Tamiya, AFV, Revell. Some pretty nice offerings in those brands as well. I asked him about demographics. He said over 60% were men in their 50s and older. The next group was young fathers trying to get their kids into something besides video games.

Has FSM seen a spike in new members lately? And does FSM collect any demographics, like age?

Maybe this information could encourage some of the mom and pop stores to take another run at the market before they close down.

I haven't been here long enough to know if there's been a spike.  But it seems like there is at least one new person signing up every day...

edit:  And a warm welcome to you as well!  I am sure you will like it here.  There's a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful modelers here.

I can't speak for the Mag, but as far as the forum goes, there has been a lot of new members over the last year. In March last year someone kept count and it was over 30. Of course, as with any forum, not all of those are regular posters and many just post an intro and are never heard of again, but I guess that is the way of things, its not for everyone. But a good number have got stuck in and are now a part of the furniture and you son forget how new they are to the forum.

Of those new members, a large chunk are returning to the hobby after time away ranging from a few years to 30 or 40, and a good number of those have indeed retired and now have more time on there hands.

I think the hobby shop's have a tough challenge. The ones I see have a good mix of model kits ranging from the high end Dragon Hase kits to those intended more for people new to the hobby of what ever age. Our local LHS does seem to have more of the former. But it does seem more aimed at the R/C and rail road builders with the model section, though being a decent size, tucked away in a room at the back, and I very rarely see anyone else in that section.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
