Hello from the midwest
Posted by oldsalt on Sunday, August 3, 2014 12:31 AM

I am a retired Army Colonel who never lost his passion for ships.  Strange I know, but if you saw how well I swim you would understand immediately.  I have been building models since 1955 and after a fairly long break I am looking to return to the hobby.  One thing I noticed was that the model manufacturers are great at churning out endless versions of older ships, planes and the like, but they are a lot slower to generate models of the newest pieces of military equipment.  Does anyone else remember how Revell got into hot water for their early release of the USS George Washington?  So why isn't there a kit of the USS Gerald R. Ford or the USS Zumwalt?  I realize that the level of detail for new models is an order of magnitude higher than Revell's old USS Forestall, but the new ships seem to have very little exterior detail and the younger crowd, all 5 of them, would probably relate more with a stealth destroyer than another version of the Bismarck.  Of course those are my opinions and I could be wrong.  What do you think?

Welcome to the Forum!

I've built some ships, but only WWII--nothing modern.  I don't know the story about Revell and the Washington.  What was involved?

The how's and why's of what manufacturers produce may not be known to us in this plane of existence.  I have an idea it has to do with profitability and sales, though.

Anyway, welcome aboard.

Good to have another Army guy, back into modeling.

We're friendly and  as to you building ships, I know an ex-Navy that builds tanks, so why not?

Welcome aboard. The question you ask about ships is often asked by modellers of many genres. Why another Tiger instead of this tank or that tank. I am surprised these modern ships have at least not had a look in though.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so
