                        Thank you all for your responses. Just getting back to FSM today to check on messages. Consensus is plenty of table space, lighting, and shelving. So I plan to take two two-drawer filing cabinets and use them as the supports for a 36" by 80" door for a table, one of the walls dedicated to five 7' x 12" shelves, and a smaller table for holding tools and paints. Decided to use an overhead shop light with two 48" daylight flourescents. Air brushing will have to be in the garage as I have no windows in the basement. Some of your comments reminded me of when I lived in an apartment in Alexandria VA over 30 years ago. We had a walk in closet which I used as a study room and hobby room.                         Welcome Paul. I have a small table with extras that I added as I went along. It will be a trial and error trip for you. You'll figure out what's essential and what's clutter as you go along.

                        Thats pretty much my case, I work on an old fisher price cheap pool table that doubles as a hockey table. Wow, thats a lot of space to work with! I would recommend that you might want to set up an airbrushing booth near a window in the room. It would also be a good Idea to put cheap tables of the same height all around the walls so you could have your building area, your airbrushing area and your paint storage. Thats all really. Shelves would be cool to for displaying the models. Hope we all can help you!

                        Welcome Paul...Start with the table, a good light, and begin collecting tools. Then the rest of your building career will be protecting that small space that's left to actually build models. Also, if you have young kids, watch the security on keeping your favorite tools. When mine were young i had to lock up a drawer to keep them safe. Enjoy the best hobby in the world. Bud

                        Welcome to the forums, Paul!

                        As for setting up your work area, I suggest you focus around your building bench. Give yourself plenty of room there! Kits and tools (along with drying assemblies take up a lot of space)

                        As for the rest, it's up to you. I know that, as you continue building, you will change the arrangement more often than not.

                        Welcome to the forum. I'm another that works out fo a tool box at the kitchen table or my lazy boy. Hope to have a dedicated workshop done in the near future though. Good luck on yours.

                        I have a 6 foot table that ends in my L-shaped computer desk. Ihave plenty of shelf space and plenty of extra lighting. Make sure your the one that sweeps or vacs the floor too!
                        And by the way...welcome to the forum...tons of good info to be had for the asking!

                        Welcome to the forum Paul....to tell you the truth, I get a whole spare bedroom to myself....In it I have my paint booth, a nice sturdy bench, with plenty of lighting, magnification....everything in arms length, a lot of A/C memorabilia, reference shelving, and new kit storage.....and yet, I still bring it all out in the living room, and dining room table....go figure!!! LOL Wink [;)]Tongue [:P] Enjoy the site!!

                        welcome to fsm. although i work off of whatever table or desk is handy w/ my tacklebox/toolbox handy, i would love to have a bench w/ shelving for the kits i am building, the air compressor out of sight beneath, a clear top so i can put the instructions/reference photos in a place i can have ready access. i would also like a section of shelving with slots for the paint jars, tools, and glues/putties. ]

                        Hello Paul, Welcome to the forum. I would suggest you start with a sturdy desk/bench. From there I think it is a matter of personal preference. I would like to build an "L" shaped work bench with each section being 6' long. One leg of the "L" will have self and supplies for building and the other section for painting & decaling. I also would like to build an island that holds all my bench tools(jewelers drill press, mill, lathe...etc). My PC will go in the corner of the "L" shaped bench.Big Smile [:D]

                        Hello to all...I have been an arm chair modeler for a number of years but as I reach retirement I see all these kits that want to be built. My interests have been 1/72 WWII Pacific aircraft and figures of all historical periods. I have never had a real hobby workshop as many of you do, always working out of a small closet arrangement or on a table in the laundry room. We built a new home and I have a great space for a hobby room. The area measures about 14 by 14. What and how would you recommend I set it up? I welcome any and all suggestions. PDR
