Hey Guys! An Intro and a Question.
Posted by ExoFly on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 11:06 AM

Hello everyone,

I've been working with scale models off and on for many years, and im now trying to get a bit more serious with my results. Hoping to learn quite a bit from you guys, and to be at a point where I'm answering other's questions, in the future.

The reason I came upon the forum is I've been searching the internet for an answer to my question, and I cannot find anything. I'm sure there's info out there, but maybe i am using the wrong search keywords...

My issue is with paintwork. Im finally getting good results with my airbrush, but sometimes ill overlap too far, or pull up a speck of paint with the masking tape.

I'm trying to touch up the spots with a brush, using the same thinned mixture of paint I sprayed with, but the colors dont match up. I've tried messing with the mixture, but am having no results.

Does anyone have any advice on this topic?

Thanks in advance,

Chuck

Hi Chuck!  Welcome to the Forums!  Glad to have you aboard!

I'll try to help with a couple of your questions even though I'm not an expert by any means.  If this doesn't help you, go to the painting section of these forums.  The guys there should be able to give you more help.

Pulling up the edge of the paint is a common problem and is easily fixed.  After you put the tape down, burnish the edges down with something smooth.  I then put down a coat of Future, sprayed or brushed, to the edges of the tape.  This seals it up and prevents the paint from seeping under the tape. Let it cure for a couple hours and then put on your color coat/coats.  After letting this cure for at least a couple hours, slowly pull the tape up and away from the color you just put down.  This has worked for me for quite some time.

You said you overlap too far.  Without seeing a pic of this, it sounds like you are not taping far enough to cover the area you don't want painted.  After masking the edges, use some post-its to cover the area you don't want painted.

Don't have an answer on matching up the paint.  Try the painting/spraypainting section.  Let me know how you make out with these problems.  Good luck.

1972 oldsmobile trunk

1972 oldsmobile

Thanks so much for the reply and advice! Will definitely use it going forward.

Here are 2 pics of the car. The color scheme is for my lil 9 year old girl.

You cant really see the touch up as much on the front fender stripe, but you can definitely see where i was experimenting on the trunk. Ha!

Thanks again,

Chuck

I ended up doing a quick tape job around the problem areas and resprayed. Everything came out perfectly. Gloss clear coat on top is making everything pop too.

Now i try my first attempt at a paint wash over door indents and around the engine frame! Wish me luck!

Thanks again,

Chuck

I'm still a noob but I have had good results touching up small spots with a lightly thinned mix of your color using the air brush, less air and a little mist at a time. Good luck.
