building a xebec
Posted by syzygyjohn on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 10:23 AM

Hi everyone

I just joined and I already have a question.  Does anyone have the Heller model "Le Chebec".  I need to get the sail dimensions as I bought an old used kit that has no sails.  It is a wonderful model and I would like to do it up right.

Thanks

John H

Welcome. Your best bet is to post and ask in the ships forums thread. You'll better responses there.

Yes come on board!

you will get all of the info you need. There's been a couple of builds posted.

Count the oars.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Welcome

I have a friend who built that model several years ago, but did not put sails on.  He no longer has instructions nor sails.

I built a different lateen rigged Heller kit, the le France.  I made my own sails, as I wanted to display with sails furled.  In that case I made the sails as long as yards, but much shallower (depth perpendicular to yard).  My reasoning was that cloth unlikely to be anywhere sailcloth thickness in scale, and I was afraid if I used actual sail dimensions the furled sail would look too bulky.  I feel this worked well, so you might consider that route.
