Lol. I should specify a bit. Combat aircraft.  Bombers, fighters, etc that actually saw combat. I am starting with the ETO, but eventually the pacific as well. I'll likely throw in a few of the crazy german experimental craft from time to time, but the combat aircraft from the ETO are my passion. They also happen to be what I've been most successful at building in the past.

I do. I was in contact with the curator almost 10 years ago (before it actually opened) because I was researching that battle. Wanted to do a diorama. Well, was gonna do 3 B17's in formation with 2 fw190's, 2 bf109's, and 4 p51's duking it out. Lost my research, but I had tail numbers, nose art, pilot names, etc for the planes that were actually involved. My grandpa actually got to go over for the dedication when they opened because I accidentally came across their website and sent an email. It was really cool. 

Well if you ever make it over, you will be kept busy. There is the American cemetry near cambridge where a lot of member sof the 8th are laid to rest. there is the IWM at Duxford which includes the American Air museum. And most of the former bases have a memorial at least and several have a museum. You throw a stone in east Anglia and it has a good chance of landing on a former USAAF base. There are 3 former B-17 bases with 20 mins drive of where i am and one of those is just outside our village and part of the runway is strill in use for glider flying.

Now that would be nice to be able to visit that museum, i bet they would be over joyed to see a relative of a crewman whose plane they have pieces of.

I take it you know the name of his aircraft.

Funnily enough, one of my big projects is to build at least one 72nd aircraft from each of the 37 military airfields in Norfolk. Its my home county and had more airfields in WW2 than any other in the UK. I have a kit for the 100th BG to do, but i still have not been able to check out the museum, even thoguh i have been past a few times.

 

I've not had the opportunity to make it over to that part of the world yet, but I'd love to see the places that played such a huge role in the build up to D-Day, and in the war after D-Day. There was a great 8th Air Force museum in Savannah, Georgia (about an hour from where I grew up) though. Went there several times. The next museum I'd like to go to related to WWII is a little more personal. There is actually a museum in Kovarska, Czech Republic that is dedicated to the air battle that happened over that village in September of 1944. That was the battle in which my grandpa was shot down. They have pieces of his B17 there and all sorts of other cool stuff directly related to him. I hope I get a chance to see it some time.

Thanks, y'all. Yes, it is a huge undertaking, but I've been infatuated with the air war of WWII since I was a kid. My grandpa was a radio operator on a B17 in the bloody 100th. He was shot down and survived, not only POW camp, but a march with 2 fractured ankles. Hearing his story combined with my dad's love of modeling...I didn't stand a chance. Lol.

Welcome aboard. Thats a large project indeed. But i like where your coming from. I have a couple of large (though not that large) projects myself. I may never get there, but i will have fun trying.
