Back to My Roots
Posted by Harrytheheid on Saturday, November 12, 2016 5:06 PM

Hi Guys,

I'm a British expatriate engineer resident in China.

I've been assembling and painting 54mm/75mm white metal figures and placing them into small dioramas/vignettes for years, and recently decided to get back to my roots with a return to scale modelling.

My main interest at the moment is modelling the Vietnam War and US forces in WW2, so I've a bunch of 1/35 scale injection molded and resin figures on the workbench right now and also have a couple of M151/MB Jeeps nearing completion.

Once I get these smaller kits weathered up I'll be moving on to Tamiya's M4A3E8  and Cromwell MkIV. Having gone through the instructions for both tank models, I don't see anything too frightening -- which means I better be careful because there's bound to be something that trips me up during the construction stages....Confused

I'm extremely glad to be here on this forum and hope to pick up plenty tips and advise; and who knows, I might also be able to pass on a few of my own.

Not sure if I've got posting images figured out yet, (I use Photobucket), but here's an attempt at posting a few photo's of a rather winsome young US Field Nurse which I finished off a couple of days ago. She's earmarked for a relatively large diorama set in the ETO around early November 1944. At 1/35, I simply don't think it's worthwhile trying to detail faces to the same extent I'd do in the larger scales, but I reckon she ended up looking okay and will enhance the scenario that I have planned.

Cheers

Here's where I'm at right now with one of Tamiya's M151's and Italeri's Ambulance Jeep. Still have some detailing and weathering to do, but they're both coming on fine, I think.

Bish

Welcome aboard, and glad to see you have the image posting sorted out.

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, after my initial posts were approved it took a moment to realize that I could just post pictures from my Photobucket account in the usual way rather than go through the rigmarole of using the "insert image" cammand.

No worries, and I'm really enjoying the recent posts on building and painting the Tamiya Firefly. Might be able to use some of the tips and techniques discussed when I get onto my Tamiya easy Eight later this week.

Cheers

Trust me -- it's not. I was a bit surprised at how difficult I found painting a 1/35 scale face was compared to my more usual 54mm/75mm efforts, but I can only improve with more practice.

Later this week, I'm going to be attempting my first 1/35 tanks since I was a teenager -- and that was an awful long time ago....Sad....So as far as I'm concerned, I'm a total newbie at this kind of thing. Soaking in as much tips and techniques from this forum as I can is going to help a lot of course.

Thanks for the welcome by the way.

Hello Harry!

Welcome to the forums! Glad to see you here because I feel we need more Vietnam era modellers here on the forums. Good thing in the last time there are some really nice models comin' up on the market - the Dodge M37 is finally there, looks like the M43 Ambulance won't take long neither. There's the V100/M706 armoured car, new M113 is announced and so on. Of course there are still some missing or available only in resin.

So, good luck with your modelling projects and have a nice day

Welcome aboard indeed! Its great to see another modeler who has an interest in the Vietnam war of figures and armor! That is certainly a small crew in most sites or clubs. I do like your figure work as well.

I can't speak for any of the Tamiya M4A3E8 builds aside from their original issue from when Christ was a Corporal, but their Cromwell kit is the epitome of a joy to build. There are no speed bumps engineered into that kit. it has been one of my favorite armor builds for its ease, speed, and quality of detail. I ran into problems with the tracks on mine during painting, but that just could be me and my use of mediums.

Hi Pawel,

I already have a couple of small 1/30 scale Vietnam dioramas built, albeit I've used pre-painted figures in both and not guys I've done myself. I've also got another two at the WIP stage - and again, both feature commercially available 1/30 scale finished items. I'll post them up when I get the chance, and then I'll be moving on to doing my own 1/35 scale models and figures for dioramas in future. These will include Tamiya and an Italeri M113's.

I'm aware that a V100 is available in resin from Verlinden, but can I ask which manufacturer is doing an M37? It's a must-have if I can get my hands on one.

I only have one Bravo6 figure set at the moment and still have to put it onto my "painting assembly line", but I do intend to obtain several more sets early next year.

Postage from the vendors I buy from in the UK or Stateside to Mainland China is an absolute killer, but it's not so bad if I can find what I want on-line from Hong Kong.

Oh, by the way, I called the Jeep an M36 in my initial post....Embarrassed....that's cos of

1/ stupidity

2/ still getting used to US AFV nomenclature

3/ I've got Academy's Jackson on the brain and have been winding myself up to get one on order

4/ all three reasons....Smile

I've corrected it to MB.

Willdo on the photos.

As for being our own worst critics -- how very true that is. I'm the world's worst for going back and messing with stuff I completed months, even years, ago. Yeah, sometimes it's difficult to convince yourself that you've taken any particular project as far as you can and it's time to move onto the next one.

Well, I'll find out how easy/difficult the Cromwell is to assemble pretty soon.

Thing is Bish; I'm really a figure painter, not an armor modeller (yet), although you wouldn't think it to see my 1/35 figures so far....

Sad

....I'm back into 1/35 armor so I can get consistency of scale in my dioramas. Having said that, I really enjoyed putting those Jeeps together and hope that spills over into the other kits I've ordered up.

Cheers

I do diorama's myself which means i need to be a model builder, figure builder, scenery builder and a few other things. After 30 years, iam only just starting to master figures, still some way to go though. A lot of people avoid them.

Not really mate....Smile....it's not as if I have to catch an East Indian Clipper ship sailing via Suez, or taking the long way around the Cape of Good Hope.

A 3-1/2 hour flight gets me down to Hong Kong, then an 11-hour flight to London, and finally a 1-1/2 hour flight up to Scotland. Only, I can't think of a single reason why I'd want to do it again....Big Smile....last time was three years ago and it took days to get my back unkinked.

Yeah, I've been enjoying going through the Diorama, Figure and Armor threads and hope I can make a few positive contributions -- as well as learning a lot from you guys.

Cheers

Hello Harry!

The M706 has been done in styrene by HobbyBoss. And the M37 we finally got is by Roden. Rumors say AFV cLub is working on another M37 and a new M113 - but it can take them another ten years or so, so let's enjoy what's already there!

Bravo6 figs sure are beautiful, but you can get close to that level if you work on cheaper styrene figs and re-do some folds, seams and details.

Don't worry about the numbers too much and good luck with your builds, have a nice day
