Right into the fire

I've been a long time lurker here and have really enjoyed reading the threads in all the forums. Some of the work you guys do just blows me away, honestly! If I can ever come distantly close to what I see posted here, I'll be happy.

I've gotten back into the hobby after moving out while I navigate a divorce. That's a story for another day, but in the meantime, I hope scale modelling will be a nice diversion to all that.

So a buddy of mine brought back a 1/144 F-RSIN Convair 990 from a hobby shop in Paris and gave it to me as a gift. Holy smokes. I guess whatever I attempt going forward will be a piece of cake. This thing is one hot mess. I'm doing my best with it. It's a fit nightmare so I'm using it as a good introduction to filing, filling and sanding. Maybe you more experienced builders wouldn't be as challenged as I am with it, but I'm just having fun and learning from it. As to how it turns out, well, who knows. I do know if I get that far, I'm going to have to put it on a stick as the landing gear is just trash.

Maybe if I can figure out posting pics, I'll bring this over to the airliner thread. I've got Eduards 1/48 F6F up next, which I think will be more like it.

I'll have lots of questions as I relearn this hobby so I apologize in advance for being a pest.

Glad to have you with us Pete!

I've been building for 70 of my 76 years and I'm still learning something new almost every day. If there are any clubs near you, or contests being run, join one of them( or two if you have the time). I have learned so much from the members of our club. We go to at least 4 or 5 contests every year. Any contest that is within a two hour drive. Sometimes I'll enter something and sometimes I don't. Walking around a contest, even if you don't enter, and looking at all the great builds there is breathtaking. Meeting new people and picking up their tricks of the trade is great.

Don't worry about being a pest. We call that a "newbie" and we've all been there at one time or another. That's the way we learn. Sssooooooo, sit back and have a few sips of your favorite brew CoffeeBeerDrinksToast and build away. Enjoy.

Welcome Pete!

First things first:  Don't EVER feel you are being a pest.  This is a great forum to be in and, not matter anyone's experience level, we're always constantly learning.  I don't care if you've been in the hobby for 5 days or 50 years.  I think that's part of the allure and the challenge of this hobby.  You're constantly moving forward.  If we stopped growing and learning, then we become bored and it's time to seek another hobby.  I've been in this hobby for a wonderful 39 years and I am STILL trying out new things (most of them are the simplest new things, too).

Sorry to hear about the divorce though.  That's the good thing about this hobby we share.  It's a good outlet which serves a few purposes.  It helps us relax.  It helps us create.  It helps us share and bond with others.  Check in often.  It's great therapy.  Propeller

Welcome once again,

Eric
