It all started three months ago!!

Greetings from Lynnwood Washington!

So, three months ago with the wife out of town and my daughter at a friend’s house me and my son (6 years), left to our own devices, were essentially batching it.  I was trying to come up with ideas of something we could do together.  As a kid, I remember my father buying me model kit airplanes to build and I thought that would be a fun thing to do with my son.  So we went down to our local hobby store to see if we could find a kit that would fit our interests.  We picked out 1/48 Minicraft Piper Super Cub as this is a Plane that my brother in law flies.  Needless to say, the build did not go all that great.  I had no idea what I was doing.  We got yellow paint all over the kitchen table.  Testors cement glue (the kind in the tube) sticking to everything I touch cause it's all over my hands..... I had my son paint all the pieces of the kit directly on the sprue without realizing that the glue would not adhere to the painted components.  It was a complete and utter disaster.

Despite the failed attempt I decided to find tips on how to build scale models and google brought me to this site.  Reading through some of the forum posts, looking at some of the pictures of some recent builds by members of this site, I was blown away at some of the workmanship and level of detail that goes into these builds and it has genuinely piqued my interest.  I have since purchased "Essential Skills for Scale Moddelers" and "Building and Detailing Model Aircraft" because god knows I need all the help I can get.  Anyways I just wanted to say hello and am looking forward to this new-found hobby of mine and learning from all of you!

Cheers!

Welcome to the Forums Chip! Glad to have you aboard!

You've come to the right place. The members here are very knowledgeable and are ready to help out with any questions/problems that you might have. Just go to the section that you have questions on (Aircraft, Autos, Ships, Tools, Painting etc.) and ask away. That's what we're here for.

I've been building for 70 of my 76 years and have received a lot of help from these forums since joining. My favorites are WWI & WWII aircraft and also sailing ships as you can tell from my avatar. I do build whatever strikes my fancy and my wallet says OK. The next time you get to your local hobby store, check with the people there to see if there are any local clubs around. That's a sure way to get a lot of help.

So, sit back and have a few sips of your favorite brew CoffeeBeerDrinks, or Toast and build away. Hope your son keeps building too. My grandsons are getting interested so I keep trying. They like the reaserch part better than the building.

Hope I've helped you a little. Enjoy.

Welcome! Yep, we all build a glue bomb now and then.

Cool to share with your boy, beats drinking brown liquor and cleaning shotguns.

Check out Youtube, there are a lot of build logs at every level.

Any man who builds models with his young son is A-okay in my book!  That's how I got started in this hobby 40 years ago.

Welcome to the forum!  One things I'd like to say above all else is "There are no dumb questions!"  So ask away about anything and everything.  One thing you'll find here is that we ALL make the same mistakes no matter how long we've been at it.  It doesn't matter if you've been at it for three months or three decades, we all still get glue on our fingers and paint still gets spilled.

Glad you're aboard now and I hope you and your son keep building together!

Welcome to the forums, check with Galaxy Hobby and see if they have a flier for the April show in Renton. You and your son might enjoy the venue, they have a make and take, LOTS of vendors, and many, many people wandering about happy to talk models. Like mentioned before no stupid questions here. Most of us have been there done that, will do it again to remind ourselves not to do that. Welcome to the hobby and ENJOY!

we're modelers it's what we do

Thanks to everyone for the warm greetings!  I will definitely check out the show in April!  Galaxy Hobby was where we picked up the 1/48 Super Cub.  Very nice couple who run the shop there.  They made my son and I feel welcomed.

Welcome aboard! Keep plugging at this with your son and you will both get better! Some of my fondest memories of time spent with my father, who recently passed away, was those where we built models together. I'm sure that you and your son will create many happy memories together and one day you will laugh about the first misadventure ...

I don't know about the rest of you but all this discussion of fathers building models with their sons is really striking a chord with me.  My dad built my first model with (or more like "for") me back when I was around 7 years old in 1977.  Now here we are nearly 40 years later and the memories are still fresh in my head.  They'll be with me forever.  That's the beauty of a dad and his son(s) doing stuff like this together.  The kits are great and all that but little do we realize that, in the process, you're creating in your son wonderful memories that will last him for the rest of his life.

Whenever my folks would take my brother and me to parks back when we were kids, we always had our footballs, baseballs, frisbees and other such toys along when we went.  I would ALSO have a model airplane come along with me at the same time!

Hey, Chip -

Good for you, thinking of something like building a model with your son, what a nice thing to do. Actually, anything you do together is time well spent. Building models is helpful for youngsters in several ways. If they stay with it and advance their skills they learn patience, dealing with the complications of following the instructions, plus hand/eye coordination as they use the tools and paint brushes.

This is something you can share with him until his young adulthood, then if he continues with the hobby he can share it with his young ones. I'll bet you're a good Papa.

Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun anyway.  If you are in the area check out Skyway Model Shop and talk to Emil.  A wealth of knowledge there and always glad to help.  I sure do miss the place after moving to N.E. Texas a while back.  One of my favorite hang-outs and not far from the Museum of Flight for inspiration.  Good luck.

Yeah, I lost my Dad, a Vietnam vet, to prostate cancer back in 2004.  He was 65 years young! A strict but wonderful Dad.  He never had the pleasure of meeting his grand kids though my daughter shares his name.

With the advent of ipods, ipads, xbox and things of the like I try to be a presense in both of my children's life and continue to strive and find common ground with my kids even though they are six and ten years of age.

It won't be long until they are both out of the house.

I definitely plan to check out SkyWay Model Shop.  They have a painting clinic coming up that I might checkout.
