Greetings from the Old Dominion!
Posted by Just Tinkerin' on Sunday, January 14, 2018 11:54 AM

Hello everyone,

Just thought I'd stop in, say hello, and share a little about myself. As a young child I managed to piece together whatever airplane models my mom found while out shopping in the local discount stores. Back then I didn't care about accuracy, sticky fingerprints, wrong color paints... I just didn't care. Times were simple. Then as I grew older those models got thrown out and replaced with R/C cars. Something I stuck with for a good portion of my life... from 1/12 scale electric to 1/8 scale fuel On-Road. Hung those up about ten years ago as my eye sight and reaction times grew poor. Started getting outrun regularly by what I call the xbox generation and just generally became less competitive. So now along with my poor eye sight, my knees, and back I'm looking to get back into something satisfying to do with my time. I recently visted Hawaii and walked through a few aircraft hangers on Ford Island at Pearl Harbor. Saw some life size dioramas featuring beautiful WW2 birds. Took me back to a simplier time in life and has gotten me excited about maybe creating my own dioramas featuring all those WW2 planes that sparked my imagination back when! Hope to use this forum and resources to learn and refine a craft! Just really need to pick a scale and realize a vision! I'm thinking 1/48 or 1/32... as I mentioned my eyesight isn't what it used to be!

Welcome to the forums, Markus!

I can sympathize with you regarding vision.  I have to use an OptiVisor now to do my painting and assembly.  I haven't broken down and gotten glasses, but that's probably going to have to happen, when my arms are no longer long enough to hold a book at a distance where I can focus on the text.

Looking forward to seeing your work!

Best regards,

Brad

Welcome!  I need glasses AND my optivisor - I feel incomplete without it on ;)

Funny - my mom used to get me a model and a choclate bunny for easter.  I think I got the Revelle USS Arizona 3 years in a row - god bless her.

Thanks,

John

Welcome to the Forums Markus! Glad to have you aboard.

You've come to the right place. I've been building for 71 of my 77 years and the eyesight has deteriorated and I've been told I have cataracts that will need removal soon. Don't know if that will do away with the optivisor I've been using or not. Also have arthritis and nerve pain in my hands that make it hard to work on models. It feels like every time I start working at the bench a freight train goes by next to the bench. Got some good advice on dealing with that from a few of the members. Really great guys here that have been there and done that and are ready to help with problems/questions. Hang in there and hope you enjoy the hobby.
