New member with future building plans
Posted by Mantis on Monday, September 17, 2018 5:16 AM

Hi there,

As a new member, i thought i'd start by introducing myself.

As you can see, my forum name is Mantis, but you can also call me Matt.

I'm from The Netherlands, but I live in SE Asia.

When I was young(er) I did some model building and had lots of fun with it.

I would love to pick it back up again, since I spend most of my days behind my computer and my hands (and mind) are often itching to do something else.

Unfortunately, the model-building scene is non-existant where I live.

There is literally no model building shop in the entire country.

The good thing is that I'm going back to my own country for a short holiday in two months.

Obviously, I will be buying model kits that will keep me busy for at least a year.

Since I can't just go back whenever I want, I have to make sure that I buy the right stuff and don't foget anything I can't buy here.

As preparation, I think it's a good idea to join this forum.

I also enjoy browsing around seeing what everybody else is doing and reading the many tips and tricks from much more experienced builders.

Who knows? I might be able to share my own one day.

Thanks for reading,

Matt

Hi Matt! Welcome to the Forums. Glad to have you with us.

If you have any questions/problems, just ask. That's what we're here for.

Hope you'll start posting photos of your builds so we can follow you while you build.

On your trip, pick out the kits that you really like to build and good luck with them.

Howdy !

Mantis
Unfortunately, the model-building scene is non-existant where I live.

While I dont have that problem, I do have to drive 110 mile's to get to a real hobby shop.

( It take's all day and I usually only have a little cash to spend. )

So , for me it's $ 90 in gas, a 220 mile round trip, and at least 5 hour's of my life in traffic..... all for a kit or two. ( And I ALWAYS forget something!)

Make a list of what you want / need before you go .... it can be Heartbreaking to finally get home..... only to realize , you forgot Paint , X-Acto blade's , Glue, ...ECT...ECT....

Welcome to FSM.

Dont worry about the thumbprint, paint it Rust , and call it "Battle Damage"

Welcome aboard, thats why there are online hobby shops,so few of us have fully stocked shops close by,and even when we do,their prices are so high they drive us to the internet. But anyway, happy building.

Hi Matt, welcome!

I buy everything now online. It is cheaper than a Hobby Store. I do miss the social part of chewing the fat for an hour at the counter, but they don't miss me walking out with nothing.

Good Luck!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Yeah that would be a good option.
Unfortunately, shipping prices to where I live are outrageous.

I'm more than willing to post (parts of) my builds if I find that it is useful for other builders out there Smile.

Hobbylink Japan is a great site.  I wonder if shipping would be cheaper

Thanks,

John
