Metal nail cutters are great for cutting plastic parts from sprues.

Following on Fox's comment, here's a photo of a typical cutter...

Back in the day, before modeling tool makers marketed sprue cutters so widely, I think a lot of the old-timers used nail or cuticle cutters like this.

Welcome to the Forums Tom! Glad to have you aboard.

I also build sailing ships. The items timmy listed above are great starters. As you build, you will find tools that will work for you. The place in the food stores where women get nail accessories is a great place. You'll find all types of nail files that come in different grades. They're cheap too. Metal nail cutters are great for cutting plastic parts from sprues. A small pkg of Q-tips comes in handy. As you get further into the hobby, you will learn to keep your eyes open in any store that you go to for helpful items. Just remember, the most expensive items are not "always" the best.

Good luck with your builds. Post pics as your build progresses on the forum so we can help out if you have probems.

If there is a thread which outlines some essential things to start with - glues, knives, tweezers, etc. I would be happy to review that as well! I haven't seen one upon a cursory search.

You will need the following : Glue. Depending on what your kit is made from you could probably use all of the following. White glue ( Elmer's ) CA ( super glue) Liquid cement ( Tenex, Testor's ) Any of the 5 minute Epoxie's

Bee's wax: comes in handy for keeping the "fuzz" off of rigging line.

Tweezer's ... Lot's and lot's of tweezer's

X-Acto Blade's and handle's

A pin-vice ( a type of small hand held drill ) and multiple sizes of drill bit's

You can Never have too many tool's , but I cant think of any more right now. I'm sure other's here will fill in the gaps I left.

I hope this post finds everyone well!

My name is Tom and I live in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I've done some model kits in the past, but have a renewed interest in modeling since I've become enthusiastic about sailing ships from the 17th and 18th centuries. I have great interest in beginning to build scale replicas and happened upon this forum. There are some increadible builders here with a penchant for hyper-accurate recreations, and I look forward to interacting with all of you as I embark upon this journey and noble hobby!

I'm likely to start with simpler kits while I get my bearings and build my collection of "tools-of-the-trade."

If anyone can link me to a useful starter kit which includes most of the necessities, I would greatly appreciate it. If there is a thread which outlines some essential things to start with - glues, knives, tweezers, etc. I would be happy to review that as well! I haven't seen one upon a cursory search.
