I've been building models for 72 of my 78 years and I understand about the failing eyesight and also those darn freight trains that keep rolling by under the workbench every time your trying to work on something and start your hands shaking. Hang in there.

I build whatever strikes my fancy and my wallet says OK. Favorites are WWI & WWII planes followed closely by sailing ships as you can see by my avatar.

Welcome back to the hobby, and welcome to the forum!

If you haven't already considered it, I recommend getting some kind of magnifier.  I use an Optivisor, and when I picked it up, I immediately wished I had gotten it five years before.  It made it possible for me to detail work again without having to hold a piece at arm's length.

What kind of sci-fi models do you build? I build Maschinen Krieger kits.  I like the look, and at 1/20th scale, the figures are easy to work on, and the finished models don't take up too much display space.

And for refreshment, I spend summer evenings in the beer garden

Thanks for the welcome! I do use a magnifier (not Optivisor though) but I find I have an issue of depth of vision or depth perception. Perhaps I need to get used to it or something. 

Sci fi for me is mostly the ’vintage’ stuff: Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Space 1999 and so on . 

Welcome you won't regret your return to the hobby and this forum is extremely helpful with tips and learning the new techniques used today. Have fun

Hello from Ohio and welcome to the forum. There are many other forums, but I found this one to be my favorite. The members here are genuine , helpful, and the threads are wonderful. I build a little bit of everything but mostly stay in the automotive, armor, or aircraft lanes. My other hobbies include playing drums, motorcycling, and shooting. Being retired my new full time job is taking care of my 20 year old special needs son, so that keeps my timeline pretty full. Once again, welcome......

Yeah, when I was a kid, I built some of the AMT "Star Trek" kits, and Monogram's "Battlestar Galactica" kits from the original series.  The Viper and the Cylon Raider featured rubber-band-powered torpedoes!

You mention depth perception, and that's a reason I use the Optivisor and not something like a bench- or stand-mounted magnifier.  I found it trickier to work on a piece when the magnifier is that far away from my face, and to hold my hands out that far.  I realized that I needed the magnification mounted in front of my eyes, like glasses, and then I can hold work at a more comfortable closeness.  I could probably retrain myself, though, if I had to.

I found using my optivisor a problem when I had my shop at workbench height with workbench stools.  I was too high above my work.  My current setup is at table height and I'm very happy with the optivisor.  Also - consider the optivisors come in different focal lengths as well - and no, I am not an optivisor salesman.

Quite some changes in this hobby since the 90’s, when I was last into building models.

( spoken in my best "old man" voice )

I remember when I was a kid, we use to have to go out in the yard, ... cut down a Tree ... and carve our model airplane from a single block of wood ...... there wern't no glue ..... we just used the Tree sap ....    Man, how time's have changed !

Sorry I didnt welcome you sooner. I havent been keeping up with the forum for the past 3 week's or so......

Greetings Edwin, welcome to the forum. The eye problem can be overcome, I have the same issue. I tried various contraptions and finally found something that works for me. Once you find that one thing... you are golden.

I use contact lenses during the day. When I use magnifiers, I usually have my contacts on (or glasses in the evening). I do find that when I have my contacts (or glasses) off, and even without the magnifier, I am able to handle detail painting a lot better.

Do have to hold the part kinda close though...

Anyway, whatever works is good

I too struggle with being able to see what I'm working on. I have my bifocals, a couple of pair of readers, and an Opti-visor, with several different lens and jeweler's loop that I got from my Father-in-Law. I tend to switch back and forth depending on what I'm doing and what scale I'm working in.

Grab your chair of choice, select a good kit, ready your tools, make sure you have plenty of light and join the fun.

Hi Edwin I also wear glasses and have recently noticed that it is easier to read and work up close with them off including when I'm eating.
