Being around the cool stuff was an issue, to keep focused. The time period I was working was also right around the end of "The Golden Age" of hobby shops. When that was the place to go for all your hobby purchases. And where all the Experts would go and you could listen and ask questions. Shortly after that was when mail order deep discount business's started to flourish and it gradually pushed out most of the brick n mortar shops. Up until recently I was blessed with having access to 2 great hobby shops. One RC and tech stuff. The other was almost 100% plastic models. Heaven. That's where I purchased most of my stash. Unfortunately the owner passed away about 2 years ago and it closed down. I can't help but think this may have been one of the last plastic oriented hobby shops left in the US.

Howdy !

Rmjtools
My first real job when I got old enough to get a work permit was at that same hobby shop.

Man, ... I wouldn't be able to concentrate on anything ,but the kit's . I would probably get fired...... for "assembling" on the job !

Welcome to FSM.

Welcome to the forums.

Boy, actually working at the LHS. Dream job for a kid. I got most of my kits as a kid as presents or from the local 5 and dime store. Once I could drive and was working, I searched out the local hobby store but since my family only had one car, and I was always putting gas in the darn thing, I never seemed to have the money to get what I wanted.

Just curious, how big is the stash?

Now that you're ready. Strip off the plastic wrap, open the box and get dirty. Beware of sharp edges and points. Your results may vary.

Remember above all else, HAVE FUN.

Hi Roy! Welcome to the Forums. Glad to have you with us.

I've been building models for 72 of my 78 years. Did all the other hobbies too, like you did, especially the R/C boats. Raced the sailboats up and down the east coast for about 10 years. All those R/C hobbies started to get just a little too expensive for me so continued on with the models.

If you have any questions, just ask. The members here are very knowledgeable and always ready to help.

Enjoy.

I would have worked there for free. The money I made was spent there anyway.

Gentlemen, I  am new to the forums and would like to introduce myself and ask N00b questions in the sub forums. My name is Roy, I’m 62, which puts me in the “Old Guys Returning to Plastic’ category. I have a long hobby history in flying models, control line, RC, RC cars, RC boats, etc. As a kid I spent all my pocket money and weekend time at the LHS bugging the clerks. My first real job when I got old enough to get a work permit was at that same hobby shop. It was a dream come true. Still the best job I ever had. Couldn’t wait to wake up Saturday morning and peddle my Sears bike to work at the shop. I probably did my last plastic kit when I was 12 or so. Over the past 10 years I’ve been accumulating a stash of kits, and I just got around to finishing up the Hobby Room I’ve been wanting for a long time. Thanks for the time and thanks to FSM for supporting these forums.
