Clear coat after oil wash.
Posted by Old jake on Friday, November 13, 2020 6:49 PM

Let me first introduce myself I'm called Old Jake for a reason. I was only a few years away from joining up for WW2. I really wanted to fly. I did eventually get a private pilot license, and have been hooked on airplanes ever since. Of course at this age there are only memories.

Enough about me...

Awhile back I saw a 1:48 model of a Spitfire and decided to put modellong on my bucket list. I had no idea what a captivating hobby I was getting into.

There is a lot to know and not much time left to learn, so the best way is to reach out to experts like you.

I am almost finished my first model, an Airfix Hawker Hurricane, and have done an oil wash over Vallejo acrylics for a weathering effect. Not great, but we'll get there.

When I tried my hand at painting years ago, we used oil over acrylic but never used waterborne materials over oil.

With such a bewildering array of paints and finishes out there, wouldsomeone please recommend a clear coat that would be compatible withmy wash.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Old Jake! Welcome to the Forums! Happy to have you with us.

For military camo I use Testors "Dullcoat" for a clear. Have used it for years with no problem over any and all enamels and acrylics.

I've been building whatever strikes my fancy and my wallet says "OK" since 1946 (6 years old). Main builds are WWI & WWII planes followed by sailing ships.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.

"Acrylics" are no longer water based.

in the case of oil based washes. I'd use Testors dull coat

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
