fhound07,

I'm a newbe to the site as well, but an old 19-D. Or "Scout". I know you're going to be tight on space, so stick to brushes for now. Worry about the "air brush" stuff when you get back state side, or to Germany. BTW, I was stationed in Mannheim '93 - '94. Your models may not survive the trip too and from Iraq anyway... (duffle's have a way of killing things). What's your MOS btw?

Hello Fhound, Welcome to the forum. I would buy a nice tackle box and stock it with a good Exacto knife set, a good assortment of various grades of wet/dry sand paper, glues (CA and liquid), a nice assortment of paint and the proper thinner to go with it, several tubes of putty, a putty spatula, good quality brushes, and a box of tooth picks. There are many more model building tools out there but these will get you started and allow you to build a nice model. A nice airbrush set up would be great also but you'll have to decide if that is possible.

Welcome to those forums first of all!

Not sure what the conditions are or will be while you're there, but I'd make sure I take enough glue (polly and super glue). Nothing more frustrating than running out of glue! If at all poss, try to keep the superglue in a fridge. It will last lnger. Of course, this may not be practical in the middle of nowhere, middle of very warm nowhere!

Not sure how things go as far a transport, but to limit your risk of disaster, why don't you just take enough to get you started on several kits, you know, the interiors, engines, figures, and wait to do the final assembly and painting when you're back. Completed models are generally more fragile than sub assemblies..?

In any case, take good care of yourself over there! Looking forward to hearing from you again, soon.

Ok here goes, i am in the army serving in germany for the time being anyway. I will be headin off to iraq soon (again). Well since my last stint in Iraq I know now the conditions there and i know modelin will be hard but not impossible. Also i have just recently pick up the glue and brushes, so im a little new to modelin. I am currently workin on a series of OIF Armor, tanks, APC, Stryker and so on.....

As a noob, what wisdom can you guys give me as to gettin started? What type of supplies do i need, and what are your views on brush vs airbrush? Thanks guys.
