Howdy from the Sonorian Desert of AZ!
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 11:19 AM
I am an old school modeler (now armchair I am afraid) named Bob that built models like crazy when I was a kid. I loved aircraft, armor and ships. I still like models a lot and have every one of the FSM issues plus lots and lots of military books. We had a partially finished basement that allowed me to make a mess when building without too much parental angst.

I used to have hundreds and hundreds of models until my ex-wife made me get rid of them. Now all I own is an unbuilt 1/350 U.S.S. Arizona kit. My soft spot is for ships mostly nowadays and I guess that I am an amateur military historian (I wish I could get paid to research and talk about warships!).

But I do still love reading about modeling and I am glad that I found the FSM forum!

Thanks for letting me say hi,

Bob

I live in little ol' Tucson. I go up to Phoenix sometimes for trips to Avalon books and a couple of hobby stores (one in Tempe and the other in Paradise Valley) that you have that I don't. Tucson stinks in terms of hobby stores and book stores.

Thanks! I like your pic of that Me 109 in the desert! It sures shows how well camouflage can work! The German ambush scheme on tanks is also neat looking.

Hi - hmm...you may be right! That would probably give my wife another thing to wory about me spending too much money on:

"More models?? - don't you already have a model of a Panther tank thingie?"

"But this one is of the Ausf. D version, honey!!"

Welcome.
As far as I'm concerned you are one ofthe luckiest guys in the world: a model builder who has easy access to the Pima Air and Space Museum. I've visited the Tucson area on several occasions and just love it.

Hello - yes, the PA&SM is really great! I have visited a half dozen times so far and I see something new almost every time. My favorite is the SR-71 Blackbird and the lineup of BUFF's is impressive in person also.

Here's a link to the Pima Air and Space Museum:

Thanks - but my Dell does not seem to have come with a Smell card - just the usual Video and Sound cards so the fumes won't get to me here. Wink [;)]

Thanks! Feel free to pluck ship info from me anytime - but be warned: my interests and knowledge tend to be modern era (WWII to present).

Thanks - I have a soft spot for the USS Arizona especially since I moved to this state. I still get choked up whenever I see a program on the Arizona Memorial.

Sorry - afraid not. I wish I had - nice class of ships (gotta love any assault carrier that is as big as an Essex class carrier) that gave us good practice before deploying the Tarawa and Wasp classes.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Bob. The Hobby Place on 22nd/Kolb is a fine hobby store. Its small but hey they have been good to me. Friendly folks there. They may help you with your various needs....ships and all. Are you currenly building?

I'm afraid I don't build anymore - just re-live my past building in my mind through great mags like FSM and Military In Scale. I have not been to The Hobby Place yet - are they on 21st Street?

When I was into HO scale trains, I used to go to Arizona Trains alot - I used to browse for an hour and then buy one or two things. It helped that my office was a half mile from them! Classic Hobbies on Campbell was a great hobby store for modeling as was Craig's Hobby Store at Wilmot/Broadway - I am not into R/C so the HobbyTown type of stores that have come into Tucson don't do anything for me.

The Hobby Place in located in the Ace Hardware store. It is on the NW corner of 22nd st and Kolb. The cater to HO trains. Personally I am not into trains. I love building WWll and modern aircraft. I just started about a year ago. So I am still new.

Ahh - now I can picture where it is. Modern aircraft are cool to build - I built most of the jet figthers from the F-4 through the F-117, mostly in 1/48 scale. I even built a scale hanger out of balsa wood for my A-10 Thunderbolt II.
