Hello, I'm new here, but not to the art or hobby of modeling. I came here thanks to John Tilley. I'm a regular on another forum that works mainly with wooden models. The professor made this site so interesting that I decided that I should check it out and see how you guys work here. (prof, you'll know me as a fellow NC'n, aka buckaroo).
I'm a long time modeler, but never a master. As a youth back in the late 50's and early 60's, my main interests were in cars...custimized cars or dragsters to be exact. In the late 60's and early 70's, while I was serving in the USAF, I by chance, caught a glimpse of a friends F! model that was probably a 1/24 scale or better. I couldn't believe the realism that I saw and when I got out of the AF, I decided to check out a model or two. I didn't find any good F1 models at the time, but did find some great funny cars with some great detail. I made a bunch of those, some smaller, but other than working on a model with soft rubber tires, the only thing that was different was that I added more details to the engine. Then I moved to modern aircraft and really enjoyed that, learning more and more techniques in decalling and air brushing. After about ten years of non activity in the modeling area, I decided that I might give wooden ships a shot and that's where I am today. I've built two complete ships, the San Francisco and the CSS Alabama and am currently rigging the Mayflower. I have learn so much in just the last three months that I'm about ready to embark on my first scratch model. I'm not one of those who prefer wood over plastic since I dearly love plastic models. Having said that, I am in doubt that I will ever build a plastic model ship, simply because of the time involved. I've already got about ten years of my life planned with three or four ships that I want to build, and as it takes me about two years per ship, I believe my time is already spoken for. :)
I am enjoying reading what others say about this wonderful hobby and only wish that I had been able to latch on to this hobby many years ago.
Thanks for allowing me to come here and browse and partake in your forum.
