newb model builder
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 13, 2005 10:42 PM
Hi all, just turned 18 and Mom has granted me my wish and let me join FSM. I am new to model making and really love it! I need to learn bout gap filling (Ex: wings to fuselage), i am using extra thick cyanoacrylate but no matter how careful I am I sand some of the surrounding area, the glue is much harder than the plastic and takes alot of sanding, I add little drops with a needle to gap and fill it pretty nicely I think but when it comes time to sand it smooth, well... I have read some bout milliput, squadron green, squadron white,Testor's contour putty, I cannot afford to try everything and need expert advice from the pros, also read bout adding acetone? and red paint?? sry 4 being such a noob but...Anyhoo, model building is sooo cool, talk about teaching control and patience,Smile [:)]. Anyhoo, hope i'm not bugging the big guys with such a newb question, but.. "I just got to, mister!" Thankyou

william first welcome. you will enjoy the forums. now for the putty question. i use squadron green if i want the putty to set up quickly. it works good. i cut a couple of pieces of tape to keep the putty away from the surrounding area and then let it rip.

Hello William, Welcome to the forum. You can do a search for "Putty Filler" by using the search option in the upper right hand corner. You'll get better results if you use the advanced option set to "any word" and set the dates fro 2000 to 2005 at the bottom of the advance searcxh page. You'll have plenty to read.Wink [;)]

Welcome to the Forums Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. There are a lot of putties & a lot of opinions but I think Squadron White is arguably the most popular. I mostly use a product called Porc-A-Filler from Home Depot, but I also keep a tube of Squadron White handy.

welcome aboard william!
I use squadron white and sometimes, liquid tube glue.
I mask off the surrounding areas to avoid rivet or panel line deatails being sanded off.

sorry fightnjoe... I just thought it humorous....Big Smile [:D]

I used to use squadron white, but then I switched over to a special limited brand of acrylic glop stuff. (I found it at a model competition.)

And WELCOME!!!!!!

Hi all, and to u Martinjk, hiya,Big Smile [:D] thx 4 askin' bout meBlush [:I], been workin out and had to help dad build a room add-on to the houseZzz [zzz]. Hey, I have had an exciting day, I finally got a subscription to FSM AND 4 the 1st time bought something on e-bay. I got a 1/350 Trumpeter Arizona in Pearl Harbor. Is this a good model? rather is Trumpeter good at making models? ha-ha, hope so cuz it's mine now. I cannot blieve someone asked bout me, thats so cool!Cool [8D] I have been mainly on the techniques forum or ships forum. Hey Martin and anybody else who wud like to, check this out and see if i'm doin ok, haven't learned to weather yet really so... these r the first models I have built, all in the past year, starting on Tamiya 1/350 Yamato now, trying to find which I like best, armor, planes, or ships[%-). Don't want to be on a open web chat room, but if any model builders want to talk to me it be cool, anytime. Anyhoo, see what u thinkShy [8)]. http://inescaleodels.fotopic.net

Welcome back William. Smile [:)] I am glad your posting again.
Congrats on your eBay purchase. As far as Trumpeter model kits go, they are great but require patience as they include a lot of parts (patience is a must). Many of their kits are quite accurate and their navy kits are considered as excellent kits. William, I would not worry about your weathering just yet, you cant "just learn" weathering as it takes practice, practice and more practice. Your first models look great and with your positive attitude, practice and some patience you will become pro builder sooner than later. You made a very good impression on these forums and its people like you (and the rest of us here at the ol' forums) that make this hobby great.
Glad to have you back!
