New Modeler from South Carolina
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 9:13 AM
Hi all:

I have recently become interested in modeling again after many years of particpating in other interests (like kids). I have built many models over the years, mostly military kits, though none which I have any longer. I became interested again after one of my kids brought home a Spitfire kit as an assignment for a JRROTC project. I thought he did a real nice job on the kit taking into account it was his first one and given the lack of decent tools we have.

Probably like many of you I am fascinated with the detail of the models and dioramas I have seen in FSM. I would like to progress to building at that level. I have many questions to ask and would appreciate knowing of any other sources of information (like clubs or events) in my area.

I particularly like the armor kits and am currently building a Tamiya M8 Greyhound. Most of the kits I built previously I have given to my kids or when I was a kid myself I used to take my models to combat. I was never much interested in the details back then!

I have not looked but probably the best help I could get is where to find a basic tool list and "must haves" for modeling.

Welcome aboard!

In regards to your question about a basic tool list and "must haves" for modeling, I posted a question in the General Discussion area. I think it's a very good question and many others may benefit from the discussion.

You can find it here:

I know this is slightly off-topic, but you mentioned your son was in JRROTC - how does he like it?

Thanks for tip on the tools topic, I will check it out.

My son is a 9th grader and this is the first year of JRROTC. He loves it. He is on the drill team which is a highly competitive and successful program in his school. They have been state champs 17 years running and national winners for the last 4 years. I think he is impressed by all the trophies they win and really enjoys the structure of the program.
