Back after 25 years and long winded!
Posted by One_to_Many on Friday, September 22, 2006 10:52 AM
Hello everyone,
I am new to forums and finally returning to modeling after about a 25-year hiatus. I was a tool and die maker for about 18 years and then worked as a waiter for about 5 years (a job which I loved!!) until my health finally caught up with me and forced me into early retirement. After 5 years of being almost totally bedridden with arthritis and other fun stuff including 3 heart attacks I finally got hooked up with a fantastic doc who gave me my life back, including able to build models again!! I’ve been mostly a collector for the past 10 years and I didn’t realize how quickly kits add up when you can’t keep track of them. My wife kept telling me how many kits I was accumulating, but I thought she was crazy. Shamefully she was right lol. When I was finally able to look at my collection I was shocked J, it was Christmas when I finally started an inventory “Wow I have one of those!” or “Wow I have (insert number here) of those J”. Thank God for an understanding wife who just says “whatever makes you happy”.
I mainly model WW2 and onwards military, planes, armor, etc. But, I also have cars, boats, etc. that I like to mess with just to keep it interesting. Now if someone could just give me an idea of what I should start building after 25 years. I’ve never filled a gap with super glue but I know how to airbrush, never used photo etch or resin but I could scratch build. So if you have any suggestions on model building, forum postings or just anything please feel free to pass them on.
BTW, sorry for the long post but I’m kind of excited to be back building again.

Welcome, Mark.  A lot of us us here have gone on hiatus and came back.  I did for 4 yrs between the ages  of 9 and 13.  My mom is pretty understanding.  I'm 22 and in college so instead of being out drinking and who knows what, I'm home glueing my fingers together.  I think she'd rather put up with models then grandkids right now.

First off, Mark... Sign - Welcome [#welcome] back to the hobby.  I took about 15 years off myself and am starting to get back into the swing of things.

If you're looking for kits, the quality of kits has grown exponentially...  Tamiya is still a good choice, Dragon/DML kits are really good.  Most of the newer ones have a few bits of P/E to sharpen your skills without having to fork out more cash for a full set.  Also, the new molding technique they have allow for some really incredible detail.  Even the new figure kits they produce have P/E belts, ammo and weapon slings.

Aircraft wise, if you're looking for cheap, most of the Academy (post 1996 or so) kits are decent for a good price, most of the ones in my hobby shop retail for $10 or so for the 1/72 scale WW2 and smaller modern planes (A-37, OV-10D and the like).

Hope this helps out.  Many folks have their preferences, but the small inventory that I have accumulated keeps me pretty happy.

Glad to have you here, Mark. I did the hiatus thing too. Pleased to have you around. Sounds like an awesome Doc you have!
