Models are Toys?
Posted by mildly_offensive on Friday, March 9, 2007 2:46 PM

I've recently returned to modeling.  I started around age 8 and eventually fizzled out as I grew older.  Now that I'm married with kids, I have let the nerd out again. LOL....

My past projects were eclectic but I never modeled armor until recently as I've become more intrigued with WWII history.  My favorite projects were mostly inspired by cinema.

I was wondering how many, if any, find this hobby to be a guilty pleasure.  If scale modeling is not a guilty pleasure, what motivates you?  I mean after all, aren't models super-detailed "toys"?

Modeling for me is a way to channel my creative juices towards subjects that I find visually appealing using a medium I enjoy, as well as a 'time-out' from the grind of daily life. I know that sounds simplified, but that's how I see it. Besides, life is complicated enough as it is, right?

Guilty pleasure? Not at all! Just pleasure :)

As for whether they are "super-detailed" toys, it depends whether one thinks sport cars are "super-fast" toys, and MP3 players are "super-convenent music toys". In essence, most hobbies we do simply for the pleasure of it. These are the things we like to play with, so if you want to define toys as such, so be it. I mean, if you like to play softball on the weekends, what really is the difference?

As to what motiviates me, both the history behind the subjects I model and the artistic skills needed to assemble, detail, and paint them.

Welcome back to modelling!

Welcome to the Forums Sign - Welcome [#welcome].  I don't consider models as toys but as historical replicas.

"Toys"

Nah, toys are what your parents take away from you as a kid when you misbehave. Once you're grownup you can defend yourself against such aggressive behavior!Evil [}:)]

Hi,Smile [:)]

Glad to have you on the forum and welcome back to the hobby.Sign - Welcome [#welcome] If you are lucky enough to have a room to work in, putting on the music you like in the backgroundHeadphones [{(-_-)}], and working on the model of your choice, the way you like it, at the pace you choose, what more could you ask for. It's R & R at its best.

Have fun. Post pics. Lots of pics.
