Welcome, I think you have come to the right place for your model info needs. I like to use earth tone pastel chalks for that type of effect. File or sand a little powder off your pastel stick and brush it on with the right size, soft bristle brush. The look is great and can be built up gradually, making it perfect for a new modeler. Just seal the model as you normally would and your done.

Haven't done any WWII plane myself but I keep woody's tip in mind just in case.

Welcome! Am as new as you are in FSM but not in modeling. Built my first kit in 1969 and just like you a WW II fan, aircraft in 1/72. Woody's tip is one nice way to go at it. What I used to do before is mix bronze or copper paint with black and it'll give that burnt exhaust look. Now I'd probably replace the exhaust with a copper tubing of the same diameter and wash it with black if you want it weathered. Happy modeling!

Woody, thanks for the tips I am sure they all will come in handy in future builds. Where would you look to buy these pastels you use on yours models, are they regular artist pastels, or can you buy them at a modeling store?

I buy mine at Hobby Lobby, but any place that caters to artist/painters should carry them. If all else fails do a web search for Dick Blick, it is an art supply store and they will send you a huge catalog for the asking. Blick is also a great place to buy premium paint brushes.

Welcome appsmaniac I build WW2 aircraft also and I use charcol for the exhaust.
What you should do first is to practice on a older kit or a piece of scrap until you get the desired effect you look for. Or else you will wreck a good model
