Coming Back home!
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, June 9, 2007 8:05 PM

Hey all,

I just wanted to take a quick moment to introduce myself.  My name is jeff, and i live in MN.  Back when I was a kid (30 Y/O know) I used to model all the time, mostly cars, but some planes.  I recall that I would spend a lot of time trying to make good models, and get frustrated that they just didn't look like the good ones at my local hobby shop.

Well, that was before the days of the internet.  Last week I was doing some surfing on the web, and stumbled across a few web sites like this one that unlocked some of those secrets to making good models.  SO many tutorials and walk throughs has made this hobby alot more accessible than it used to be.  Granted, I can't do it yet, but at least seeing some tutorials on how to paint all that good looking weathering and glossy paint jobs has re-ignited my former hobby!  I want back in!  I have a lot more patience know, and really want to make those good looking models.

Having said that, I would like to buy a book before I start to get some base knowledge on how to do this hobby right.  I am sort of a perfectionist by nature, and really want to jump right in.  Can anyone suggest a good book to buy that would give me some base knowledge on painting, building, glueing basics?  SO many paint options, glue options.... I want to learn more.  I've never even heard of BMF before, but know I see how people get that realistic chrome trim on those muscle cars, needles to say, I'm excited.

THanks, and I look forward to presenting some work someday soon!

First of all Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forum.

Here are some books you may want to look into:  Painting and Finishing Scale Models by Paul Boyer from Kalmbach Books and How to build Scale Models from Kalmbach Books.  These two may be a starting point for you to look into.  Also check out this link:

There are also some links on the FSM website that can direct you to some books and such.

Jeff,

Welcome to the Forums and welcome back to the hobby! Paul Boyer's book as well as some of the others from Kalmbach Publishing are a great place to start.
