I've only been in museum variety locomotives; very massive, but static. Were you in an operating Big Boy?  I grew up in Florida, about 200 feet from the Fla. East Coast RR track in the '50s.  When the trains came through, the house shook and conversation just stopped until it passed. I love those early diesels.

Cowboy [C):-)]

I'd also like to have an HO model of UPs Big Boy. It wouldn't be time period correct of course, but after having spent time in the boiler of the real thing, it just looks so massive and way cool! but i just can't seem to get past the price tag though. Ouch......

Warmest regards,

Roger

You mean to tell me that NOT having that was an option? I thought that was required on all dioramas! Of course i wouldn't dream of excluding that! Who knows, maybe even add a low lying light bulb to simulate the sun. A cowboy does need a sunset to ride off into, ya know!Propeller [8-]

Don't forget that long dark tunnel and the rickety tressle bridge over the rugged gorge, with the raging river passing by the abandoned silver mine and the logging yard......

...and thank you for your support. Actually though, i've been here for awhile. I took a few months away from the boards (and modelling) and just getting back. I'm still trying to catch up on everything i missed. Unfortunately the lack of space does seem to be a rather common problem. It has been suggested that i take a look at the N scale, but i guess that's just too small for my taste. Besides, ya tend to go with what you know. The last layout/diorama i had was extrememly basic. Some grass paper glued to a plywood board with a few plastic buildings. But oh, was it alot of fun!Propeller [8-]

Actually it's kinda funny this came up. Was at my parents house this last weekend, and i dug out what was left of my model trains. My freight engine and cars were kinda busted up after 15 years in storage, and the condition just broke my heart. But my plan is to at least clean em up and fix what i can. I figure i can at least set them on the shelf until i actually get that elusive extra space. Except when i do, i would LOVE to do a layout with an old west town. Saloon, corrals, stagecoaches, steam engines, the whole 9 yards!

Warmest regards,

Roger

Hi DesertRat,

Welcome to the site.  Looks like we have quite a few closet model railroaders in the group.  The common theme seems to be a lack of space to build a layout.  Dioramas help to fill a little of the void for those of us who enjoy building scenery, etc. Again, welcome and thank you for your service!

Welcome! I used to build HO model railroads myself. I have since moved on to only plastic kits. Mostly, due to lack of space in my house! 1 or 2 HO sets on 4x8 sheets of plywood, start to take up a bit too much room!

Hi Martin,

I am a former HO modeler myself, and only switched to armor/aircraft/ships because of lack of space. Also lived in Cinti for about 12 years.  Hope to see some of your work soon!

New here, thought I would say hello
Posted by basementdweller on Saturday, July 14, 2007 4:35 PM

Hi, I have been reading and registered to this website for some time, about time I said hello.

My main hobby is building an HO scale model railroad. I have also been helping my son build 1/35 scale armour and found myself once again wanting to build models. I have no intention of quiting on the railroad.

I am from the UK but now live in Ohio, generally my interests lie in British and American armour. I built my first diorama - nothing specifc just a scene around a British Quad Tractor. I will try to post some pics.

Anyway, hello.

Martin
