GREETINGS FROM JAPAN
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, October 10, 2003 3:01 AM
While I'm not new to modeling, I am new to FSM online. I build pretty much the usually fare (aircraft, armour, ships, cars & sci-fi)but my favorite is and has been aircraft. Of late I've been working on a Hummer from the first Gulf War & a Swiss 2-seat Hornet. I'm a Navy aircraft electrician working on F/A-18's so I've got plenty of reference photos of that bird plus quite a few of other CVW-5 aircraft. I don't have a digital camera, yet but I will soon take the many negatives I have in to get them on disk so I can share some of these pics with fellow modelers & aircraft enthusiasts. I've got a few pics of ships (of course!) and some from Camp Zama, Japan of U.S. Army equipment & a Blackhawk. I'd really love to start a plastic model club here in Atsugi for this area (IPMS maybe in conjuction w/ the local Boy Scouts?) but with deployments & dets year-in & year-out that might just be a pipe dream. Anyway, glad to be here and I look forward to any questions Hornet modelers might have. - Calvin

Calvin,
Welcome to the forum; it's great to have you on board! Looking forward to your contributions and pictures. There's another great modeler on this site whose name is Brian (J-Hulk). He is also in Japan; don't know how close you guys might be to each other, but you should get in touch with him. Once again, welcome!

Welcome aboard, Calvin!

I've been in Japan for the last ten years now, mostly in Osaka, but I did live for a while in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture, not far at all from Atsugi and Yokosuka. I used to see and hear all kinds of aircraft going back and forth from the Kitty Hawk to Atsugi.

There were some great hobby shops in Fujisawa, as well as some good clubs. I'm not sure what's available right were you are, but I'd imagine there's gotta be a few hobby shops and clubs in that area.

Have you seen the recent 1/32 Academy Hornet? All the reviews give it 2 big thimbs up, but what's your opinion?

Anyway, welcome to the forums, and let's share some tales of Japan!

Thanks a lot everyone! This last weekend was pretty productive as far as my modelling ventures go. I finally finished up a "Freedom Gundam" and I'm nearly finished with my Desert Storm Hummer. I got a bit done on my FW-190, too. I've got to try & finish up some projects before I go back out on the Kitty! I hope to pick up the Academy Hornet before then, too. One of my fellow squadron members has that kit that he picked up at the local "Toys-R-Us" for less than 10,000 yen. That's less than 100 bucks for you people in the States!

Hey Calvin, if you can find a "Joshin" hobby shop (part of the big electronics chain), they're selling the big Academy Hornet for 8,400 yen (about $76 US!)till the end of October!

Actually, I've found the Japanese, Korean & Chinese plastic kits over here out in town to be very reasonably priced. All one has to do is shop around, just like anything! The other manufactures I usually get online.
