The easiest thing to do is just go and buy some acrylics (enamels are apparently forbidden fruit by the PO) and mail them to Dave (address is above). They could probably use brushes and sandpaper too. I've been sending Humbrol acrylics as they come in plastic bottles. Less chance of breakage, and cheaper to ship to boot! Send a selection of colours in flat and gloss. Sand, Earth, Black, Silver, don't forget the OD Green! If you were to slip a kit or two into the box, they wouldn't mind a bit! Wink [;)]

Dear FSM Community,

Once again I am overwhelmed with the kindness, concern, and generosity of everyone that stops by the forums.  It's been a while since I've been able to write; things in our neck of the woods are constantly in flux- fort the good.  There are always a lot of guys coming and going; and it's always a mixed feeling.  Several members of our little group have been moved to another hot spot.  Before they left, we were able to put together a "squad box" of model supplies and send that along with them to their next stop. We will miss them.....The next batch of guys came in on their heels, and already, the new guys are coming by looking for kits and supplies. There were quite a few guys from the new outfit that had never built models before and were hesitant to try one.  With encouragement from their buddies, they have dove right in, and are having a great time.  Even a few of our Iraqi friends have taken up modeling; for most they have never seen a model before, much less build one.....

Our base continues to be a busy hub of activity, with units coming and going, some for only a few days.  When guys come in from a convoy or a long security patrol, they try to check their email, or use the phone before they leave.  Several that have seen my notes have stopped by to see if they could get some modeling supplies, even though we may never see each other again.  Because of the generosity of the folks back home, I've never had to say no or turn anyone away.  I wish that you could see the sincere gratitude in these guys' faces, and the excitement as they dig out a kit or two.  It's always good to know that every Soldier that comes here leaves with a kit and some building supplies, and more importantly that he has a rock solid base of support back home from the friends of Fine Scale Modeler and IPMS.

We will be doing everything we can do to support the guys here until we leave in the summer, date to be determined.  All of you guys have been a tremendous boost to our collective morale.  Despite what many may think of the war, everyone has rallied behind the Soldiers and Marines on the ground here in Iraq and Afghanistan to support the various clubs that have been started.  Here in Tall Afar, we are all so very thankful for your support and encouragement.

Many thanks to everyone of you that helped make the 'Paint for Troops' project happen, especially Bgriggs, Jeff Herne, Berny13,  and each of you guys that helped organize, donate, collect , pack, and ship the paints to us and other clubs, where ever they may be.  You guys are awesome, and I am proud to know you all!!!

Thanks for everything,

Dave Wallace

I agree. This is the best situation for all of us.

I have a box of paints, tools and even a couple of kits ready to send, I'd like to know which address needs these supplies the most.

Thanks for the kind words. It is nice to know that our small efforts have made even a tiny difference in a soldier's morale.

Regarding the mail restriction on enamal paints, we probably could have "got away" with sending enamel paints by just ignoring the rules, but that isn't such a good message to others. Besides enamels require harsher chemicals to thin and clean up with, and are more hazardous to the user and more damaging to the environment. So we get to be patriotic, law abiding and environmentally concerned people, which can only do us good! We all win!

Cheers!

This is an awesome cause gentlemen.  I dont understand about the enamel paint however.  When I was over there Great Models and Squadron both mailed enamel paint, thinner, glue, what ever I ordered and there was never a problem with it.  In fact, when I was home on leave I bought at least one bottle of every model master color made and mailed them all in one big box to my address in the litter box.  There was not a problem with it.

The aircraft are off of the weather hold and are on the move again.  They should arrive before the end of this week if everything goes well.

I made an announcement at my IPMS Orange County club meeting and will be collecting alot of donations from my fellow club memebers to go out in April. In addition, I have arranged with Tony, from Tony's Hobbies to purchase several little cartons of paint at cost to send over. I'll keep everyone posted.

The package is on its way.  It left its home base and is now at a location where the flight is on a weather hold.  It should arrive soon.

I also got caught up in some personal business and was unable to get the paints to Berny either for his son to take over there. I do have several bottles, and a few kits, as well as a promise from Tony to order more that he will sell me at cost. I'll put them all together with the paints my IPMS club gathers and send them out altogether.

I was distracted and neglected to get stuff to Bernie, so I'll be sending a couple of smaller boxes of paint to Tall Afar, FOB Speicher and Kosovo this week. I received a $50 paypal donation and matched the funds myself. I ordered $100 worth of paint (at cost from my local hobby shop).

My son has in his posession $94.77 in paint.  I received $60.00 from members to go toward the paint.  They will soon be on their way to the Sand Box.  Thanks to the members that donated.

On my way to the Post Office now to send this to the people in Kosovo.  10 kits, several of the Hasegawa weapons set, Acrylics, sanding sticks and some other goodies.  My stash is small but was easy to weed out some stuff and then fill in with a few diferent kits and such.

Total cost?  Dont' care.... The reason I can to this.... is because they are over there doing that.

We have transporation arranged.  My son is going over to the Sand Box soon and has agreed to take the paints, kits or what ever is needed.  Contact me or Bill Grigg for my mailing address.

The cut off date for delivery to me is NLT 11 March.  I have talked to the manager at Hobby Lobby and he is ordering an extra supply of paint that I can buy.  The paint will arrive in the middle of next week.

Operation Sand Box is well on its way.
