IPMS Regional contest judging mandates

Pardon my ignorance to the matter, but what exactly is the '123-style' of judging?

The 123-style of judging is where only the three best built models get 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in a mdel contest category.  In the GSB (Gold/silver/Bronze), sometimes referred to as open-style judging, the models are judged by a written standard and more than three models can be awarded.

 Greg, thanks for enlightening me. Though I'm not an IPMS member, the reason I ask is that I was planning on entering my first IPMS Regional contest this month so I was wondering how that would effect my entry. The GSB style seems a little more forgiving, especially to those who are basic or intermediate modelers, or who've never entered a contest before. (I probably fit into all three of those categories by the way) 

Well, and again pardon my ignorance, if the GSB is based on a written standard, on what is the 123 style based? Opinion?

The 123-style of judging is based on first doing the "basics" of contest modeling:

• no glue marks
• sink marks/ejector pin marks- filled & sanded
• flash (excess plastic from molds)
• alighment -  parts, wheels, tracks (& road wheels) and landing gear
• seams - filles/sanded
• paint- no "orange peel", overspray, consistant sheen, lint/dust, brush marks, etc.
• decals - no silvering
