Let me be the first to post on the 2012 IPMS Nats ...

The bid was awarded to Orlando.   Went to my first Nats there back in 1999 and had a wonderful time.   Met a lot of people who have grown to be good friends.

I don't know the hotel,  but I understand that there will be a good discount rate available on the room block.

Date looks to be the first full week of August

The Orlando IPMS site says:

2012, second week in August, at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

I guess IPMS USA has decided to drop the old EAST-central-west rotation for awarding National Conventions.

I guess IPMS USA has decided to drop the old EAST-central-west rotation for awarding National Conventions.

Last nigt right before they announced that the '12 Nats would be in Orlando, the guy said that the area of the country that they had wanted to go to had not submitted any bids.  They opened it up and had to choose between San Jose, CA., and Orlando, Florida.  Perhaps maybe they were still trying to follow the rotation, but nobody from that area applied.

When East declined to bid on the 2011 convention, bids were solicited from the whole country.

2012 should have been a central convention, but that would mean central two years in a row ...

That has happened in the past.   In 2000 the show was in Dallas (central).  No one in the west chose to bid for 2001.  The region restriction was lifted and Chicago (also central) had the winning bid.

I understand that there was also a bid heard from the San Francisco area for 2012.

The 2005 Nats were in Atlanta, 2006 in KC, 2007 in Anaheim, 2008 in Norfolk, VA, 2009 in Columbus, 2010 in Phoenix (East, Mid, West, East, Mid, West); then the 2011s are in Omaha. They "abandoned" the rotation when they made the 2011 announcement last year. My understanding is that no one put in a bid from the East Coast for the 2011 Nationals. I think it's a financial thing. The walk-in entry fee for the 2009 show was <$10, Columbus was $6, Phoenix was $5. Where on the East Coast could you lease a Convention Hall and make any money charging so little? I wouldn't be surprised to see a $15 - $20 walk-in entry fee at Orlando.
