my first nationals and i also judged. what did i learn?
ask questions and bs with everyone, vendors, members, presentation folks. be specific and you will get specific answers.
i can compete. i may not win anything but i build and paint good enough that i don't have to be embarrassed by anything i submit ( assuming, of course, i build to my usual anal standards).
really look at all the catagories and build specifically for them (again assuming it is something you would want to build anyway)
rr track for rr models is a base, not the model even if it comes in the kit or is scratch-built (at least we think at this time).
being obsessed with the correct color is a waste of time. obviously lime green is not soviet armour green but every u-boat had a slightly different shade of light gray and they all looked good.
document any deviances. if you have a destroyer with a catapult and float plane have photos to back up your build.
if competing to win a major, take and evaluate digital photos of your build. that degree of focus will identify boggers you may miss with the naked eye.
judges really do read the documentation. i have pictures of TtNG YUEN with and without ratlines and the pe doesn't have any but the pe for CHIH YUEN does so maybe TING YUEN doesn't but we think it should. documentation will justify your decision.
judges are not idiots. they are modelers with a tough job. when it gets down to 3 models, you have to be super critical (to be polite) to pick the best.
remember this is still a hobby. the defense of the free world is not at stake. have fun and don't get super stressed out.
just a few thoughts way too late in the evening after completing my first judging.
