As most know, the 2012 IPMS National Convention will be at Orlando, Florida, and the venue will be Disney World. I have a feeling this one will be huge, as it will be pretty easy to persuade the family to go along. So who is planning on going, what is your process in selecting a model to take to the contest, and does your building approach differ compared to a non-contest model build?
Before going to my first Nats in 04, I read up on advice that others had regarding how to compete effectively. Aside from getting basic construction and painting right, if you enter a category that is not crowded with entries, you increase your chance of snagging an award. Following this advice, I entered the sci-fi category in 04 with a really weird model (a Modelkasten Oskar), and went home with a plaque. I think if I had entered a 1/48 BF-109 or P-51, I would have been roadkill.
For me, a contest build requires a no compromise approach - if I see a problem, I have to fix it. On my "fun builds" I will often ignore stuff that is minor or too humbug to deal with. Thus I find a contest build is much less enjoyable to do. (I am not a competitive person by nature.) To get around this, I try to choose a model I really like and want to have built so that I can delay the onset of burnout. I have a reputation for building weird subjects, so for 2012, I am planning on a Tyrrell P34 six wheeled Formula-1 race car. This will be my first automotive subject in thirty years! (And if I don't finish it in time, a buddy has threatened to force me to wear Mickey Mouse ears all the way back home! ) Damn, I'd better get started.
So - what are you planing on taking to the Nats?
