What would you pay?
Posted by Eagle90 on Saturday, August 17, 2013 12:30 PM

Hope this is the right place to post this.  I have a weird question for everyone.  Many years ago I received the Revell 1/144 Shuttle Launch Tower for Christmas.  After joining the Air Force and bouncing all over the world and carrying this huge kit around with me, about all I got completed was the Fixed Service Structure (steps 1-5 if you have the kit).  Well, classic story of I THOUGHT I had gotten rid of the rest of the launch tower since all I could find was the service tower.  So, one day I figured I didn't have the rest of the kit so why keep the tower.....yep, you guessed it, I threw it away!  About a year ago, we move in to our new house, I finally have my super man cave hobby room, and as I am inventorying my kits, putting the decals in zip-lock bags......yep, you guessed it again.  I find the Shuttle and the rest of the launch facility parts!  I had "stored" them in another kit box!  Bang Head

All that to say, I am watching eBay all the time for this kit.  No way can I afford (or justify) paying what the whole kit is going for now (you don't want to know how much it was back in the day when I received it!).  But low and behold, my persistence has paid off and there is an auction for just the tower!  GO FIGURE!

So my question is what would YOU pay to get the tower?  I've got about 4 hours before the auction is up and there is one bid already.  Do I really want this?  Yes.  But I can't justify going too crazy with it.  Maybe the planets will line up again someday and the opportunity will arise again, but just wondering what everyone thinks would be a fair price to get it.

Thanks for looking!

Are you actually planning on completing this model or is it gong to be a stash or hangar queen? This might be your last chance to get it. Bid what you think you can afford and how much it is worth to you. Without this component, the rest of the kit won't be worth much, will it?

I agree with sub. Sure, some day the planets might line up and you find another. But then again, they just might not. A few months ago I found a DFS 230 kit on E-bay that I had been looking for for a few years. But I lost my connection the weekend it was due to finish and it went for £10. A week alter another came up. This one I was determined to have, and it cost me £30. Ye I was a bit miffed that I had payed 3 times the other one, but that was out weighed by the fact that I finally had it.

I know you have plans to build it, so as long as you can afford it and you can justify it to yourself, then that's the main thing.

As the saying goes. Something is only worth what someone is ready to pay for it.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Hey subfixer,

Yes I will build this kit.  Have had big plans for it since I got it way back when.  I now have a set amount I have in mind and about 40 minutes to see if I get it!  And you are right.  The kit isn't worth much without the tower part.  It just sits there in a box. Crying

Hey Bish,

Wise words from the Jedi Master! Wink  I have had that happen on eBay many times too.  That is having me lean a little on the high side for this.  We shall see!  I'll let everyone know how it turns out in about 45 minutes!  Thanks my friend!

Well it looks like the planets lined up this time!!  Balloons

I payed $4 more than the original bid I wanted to spend, but hey, I would have been kicking myself over $4!!!  So, now I have it!  Although the PayPal payment says "unclaimed".  Not sure what that means, but if I remember correctly, eBay/PayPal changed things up and have a policy that if you have less than 25 (I think) feedbacks, I have to receive the item before the seller gets payed.  Oh well, it will all work out.

Although quite fiddley and complex the tower section could probably scratch built if worst cane to worst. I think that it would be mainly a collection of evergreen structural styrene.

In general, if you really want something, remember what my father-in-law told me many years ago:  "There are no side pockets in coffins."

Gimme a pigfoot, and a bottle of beer...

Hey subfixer,

I would if I could!  I'm STILL waiting to hear from the seller!  Angry  Over 24 hrs and nothing, and to top it off, when I paid with PayPal, it reads "unclaimed" on it!  I have a feeling that the planets were NOT quite aligned as previously thought.  Oh well, we shall see.  I still have a "cancel" button there too, so who knows.  Just be aware of a seller named "aviationmodeler"!

Good news!  Seller contacted me last night and it was an issue with the link between eBay and PayPal apparently.  He quickly fixed the issue and all seems well now.  It should be shipped today or tomorrow.  Seller was really nice in his e-mail so I would like to retract the previous "be aware" statement.  I can't wait to FINALLY have all the parts to this huge kit!
