War Thunder and World of Aircraft
Posted by BlackSheepTwoOneFour on Friday, January 31, 2014 1:15 PM

Anybody play either of those? I downloaded War Thunder and have yet had a chance to register and play. Now I came across World of Aircraft and wondered how they're stacked between the two. War Thunder is a breeze to download but World of Aircraft I noticed it take about an hour to download. Whaaaaaat?!? Thoughts?

WarThunder is fantastic!!! I will say though, being a joystick fan when it comes to flight sims, that keyboard and mice fliers have a distinct advantage against joystick users. At least they did. I love love love flying around in my Chaika and causing havoc with the other side! I have never played World of Aircraft.

An hour, you don't know how lucky you are, took me two night to download. I can't do it during the day as no one else can get online.

I have not played war thunder so I can't compare the two. Maybe its just me, I I did struggle with WoW, no where near as easy as WoT. Maybe I just need to learn how fly properly.

Bish as an alpha and beta on WoWP, it is an arcade game IMO not a flight sim (used to play the il2 series bigtime and wowp is nothing on that), I also suffered from input lag a lot with it when using a joystick

I LOOOOOOVE IL-2 sim!! Haven't played that in years nor had a chance to get the expansion pak for PC. That was one of the best flight sims I've played in  years. Of course Freelancer is another awesome game too. Freelancer is one of the better space sim I've played:

I don't use a joystick, I tried it, just couldn't get to grips. I guess computer games just are not my forte lol.

Yes, World of Warplanes is more of a beer and pretzels game, though it is fun.  Nice graphics, and it quickly jumps into combat of 15 vs 15.  Though not accurate, I like the ability to right click the mouse and be able to pan around the view while keeping your airplane steady in flight.  Air collisions can happen, and both guns/engines will over heat.  Damage is based on a health bar, as others have stated, arcade game.  There really are no missions, last side standing wins - only maps change with each new start.  Really noticeable grind when you want to achieve the higher tier aircraft.

Thunder has three level options, the first being arcade, while the other two are simulators.  Graphics are also nice, but the contrast seems to have been dialed up compared to the above game.  I've only tried this game over the last few days, so still learning, but does appear to have more beef to it.

regards,

Jack

Jester - Oh yeah - I'm stoked for Star Citizen to come out! Unfortunately it won't come out til 2015 or 2016.

One question regarding War Thunder. Will I be able to choose and pick more than one a/c and use whatever I want?

Yes, there is a multitude of aircraft available to you that are unlocked as you level up. In Arcade Battles, you can buy up to 5 slots with the currency earned in battles and more slots with currency that you can purchase with money. One thing, you can only have one of any particular type of aircraft offered equiped at a time. For instance, if there is only one Fw190 D-9 listed in the tree, you can only use one in your available slots. You cannot equip every slot with the D-9. There are some planes however, like the P-39 which have mulitple variants such as the P-39-Q, K, and others.

Interesting. I imagine it's the same thing with  multiple variants of Spitfires considering there were Mk. I, IXc, Vb, etc...

You are correct although I am not sure exactly how many variants of the Spit are in the game. I have currently leveled the US and German airforces fairly high and was working on the Russian trees when I took a bit of a hiatus.

Well it looks like I'm settled on sticking with War Thunder. Not too keen on wasting my time with World of Aircraft considering it takes an hour to dl and find out it's more an arcade type game than a sim.

Now to come up with a call sign/screen name. LOL!

I downloaded War Thunder but haven't played around with it much.  I've been playing Aces High since 2001, and played Warbirds before that.  Although the graphics won't match War Thunder, they're still pretty good, but the flight model in AH is supposedly more Sim like than WT or others. (shrug)

I love the historically based Squad Ops that are held monthly.  We just finished an early South West Pacific event (1942) in Jan.  This month is Tunisia, Dec 1942.
