I was wondering where they got so many Mustangs but then a read that actually there was only one, the rest were 1/4 scale RC models, including the B-29 which I think was 18ft wingspan. Very cool movie indeed.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!
If you want a good book on Star Wars model making try getting you hands on Sculpting A Galaxy by ILM model maker Lorne Peterson. It covers all model making subject from ships to planet environments. Good detail photos of the models.
Yes, excellent Spielberg movie although many people thought it was too long and dull. I loved it. Christian Bale was the lead actor and he was just a young kid at the time. The scene with the Mustangs shooting up the camps was pretty cool stuff.
Any body see a movie called Empire of the Sun back in the late 80's I think. They used RC aircraft for several scenes. didn't know until years later.
DiscoStu Great timing. I just finished reading an article about one of Lucas' model makers on Star Wars and how the Millenium Falcon was inspired by a half-eaten cheeseburger.

Yes, ILM was the cutting edge miniatures film effects company thru the 70s and 80s. Industrial Light and Magic. Their works include the original Star Wars Trilogy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and the Indiana Jones trilogy. Founders of ILM worked on 2001 A Space Oddesey and Silent Running among other films, prior to forming ILM. As a teen I read about their work in the sci fi movie magazines and dreamed of becoming a good enough model maker to join their crew.
If you buy some of the special edition or directors cuts of various movies, they often have featurettes on the visual effects and model making that went into those particular films.

Some of the model makers are from ILM but not all. This film has interviews from model makers both in the U.S and the U.K that have worked on various low and high budget films. Believe me, if there were a documentary on just ILM I would go for that too. It's fascinating to me the amount of work that goes into movie models for just a few moments (seconds) of screen time and then to end up in the dumpster. These people get little praise fro thier work and this film is a nice way to allow them to tell thier stories. Try it - you might like it.
I guess a company called Industrial Light & Magic - they are the force behind Star Wars, if I'm not mistaken

What's ilm?
Is it about the model makers in general or more about ILM?
I just purchased and watched a excellent documentary on the behind the scenes look at movie model making and how it is being slowly (if not already) replaced by CGI effects. The title is Sense of Scale and I can highly recommend it. Made me want to dig out the Sci-fi models in my stash and get to work!
