I got a Broomstick !
Posted by tankerbuilder on Thursday, May 22, 2014 8:53 AM
You've heard me speak of them . Yup , Big Fat Broomsticks .I got one at Home Depot today . Guess what ? I am going to put a broom head on it . Not on yer life .I'm gonna create submarines . Just like I did as a kid .Why , because I can , that's why .Plus , I like making sawdust anyway . It's great for ground cover on model railroads ! Besides , I want to see if I've really learned anything all these years .It's about fun fight ? Well , I want to see if the fun is still hiding in there ! If not , does anyone know anyone that can use a bunch of short broom handle pieces ? What got me thinking this way ?" Yeah ", I am going nuts ! Naw , I found a small box of really tiny finishing nails and my brain cells fell in the mess they made when I dropped them . " Hmm ", goes the right cell ," They look familiar " Left cell says " Shure do " So rather than have the last two brain cells I have , argue amongst themselves I will proceed ." Gees , now where did I put that hitty thingy ?"" What with to tap them in da wood wit ?"

Hi : Well , I usually use my trusty back saw .Straight cuts ,you know .Then I get out the rasps .I won't call them what I was taught to call them ! Two half rounds ( the big ones ) and a round one for the contours .The dive planes are made from scrap brass I have lying around , or wood . Depends on the difficulty of the piece . ( I think ) Anyway , I don't usually succeed in getting photos over here .If you like , I will describe the process in words and let you make a mind picture.Is that okay ? All limber holes are done with an old hand powered drill . You know , the one that looks like a member of the egg-beater family .

You know Tanks, I heard you were a plank owner on the Hunley.

Years ago up in Vallejo CA there was a bar along the highway right across from the road into Mare Island Shipyard.

Called the Horse and Cow which means something if you know a little bit about submarine service.

Anyhow it served the community for 20 years and was a great place. Pictures all over the walls and stuff. Anyways the CIA used to get films and tapes and stuff there from the returned crews.

So they had a big submarine up on the roof, The SS 33 1/3, made out of sections of HVAC duct.

I think you need to go BIG, man!

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Sounds fun!

[Admiring Starbuck's space fighter] Cassiopeia: It's a perfect machine! Born to dance amongst the stars! Starbuck: Yeah, it's bumping into them that has me worried.

Hey ! G ;

  I know of the place you speak ! .There's a few more around the country including one that used to be on Route 66 near Tucumcari ,N.M. for a while ,way back when . The 33-1/3 Was intended to resemble an early" Guppy " class boat Based on the pixielated photo , I think . My wooden wonders are Balao and others like her as well as three different types of " U" boats . Yes I also did the Hunley ! The thing is there are more than a few fictional boats that have come out of there .Like the Disney Nautilus and the Seaview .
