And thanks, everyone, for replying!  I hope we'll get some more responses.

Tanker - Builder

Well , Hi there :

I am Guilty . I have revived old threads . Why ? Well , when you get asked a question face to face , you look for an answer , right ? Guess what ? this person didn't even know , or said he didn't , about this Forum site .

I think some should be revived if for nothing else , to show the New members and readers that modelers have been asking these questions for years and YES , the answers change with technology and improvements with the building products and the Models .

Although I started accidentally , now I will just shut up and read . Thank You  Tanker - Builder

Don't stop posting as you see fit, TB!  As someone posted above, if this is what gets a person exercised, he needs to take a breather.  And that's one reason I put the question out there--some replies to revived threads really sounded like others were pretty irritated.  I was curious why it could become such a burr under the blanket.

If there's a real question there, like if one saw a 10 year old build and wanted to know how to achieve a certain effect, then I see no real problem.

What we saw over the last couple of weeks though, was quite a number of old threads which were resurrected simply for the sake of doing so.

Examples include:

  • A "welcome" post to a member who joined so long ago (12 years), his membership was no longer active and his user name was displayed as "anonymous".
  • A reply to a 13 year old "thinner question" saying "use the recommended thinner for best results"

Well, when I start reading a thread and I've never heard of most of the posters I look up at the date. Wink

Given that kits have a lifetime measured in decades, and new modellers (hopefully) enter the hobby all the time, I have no problem with thread resurection. It's not appropriate for buy/sell threads, but otherwise it harms nobody.

Personally at this stage of my game if something of the sort irks me enough to respond emotionally then I need to take a sabbatical. Second point, I've experienced the developers handi-work recently and be careful what you wish for.

I don't see a problem when an honest mistake is done and one answers it. Another thing is when an individual goes on a rampage of reviving 10-13 year old threads like we have recently seen here, many times giving just a couple of words just to bring it back.

GMorrison

I have no problem with it if it's done in earnest.

If you are referring to the recent multiple zombie restarts across all subjects, in a few days span, by one member, it is a real problem because it swamps the recent post display. But it seemes to have passed.

Same here. Somtimes it can lead to a freash dicussion. It can often depend on what the original thread was about.

I have gained some useful info from such threads. And have also been able to answer the person asking a question, in the thread that they brought back from the abyss.

It is silly though, when a ten year old thread gets another answer to a question. This does not bother me really...I have real world problems. I can see how it happens...if you do a search for a related topic, a ten year old thread can very easily pop up at the top of the list.

"Zombie" threads--problem or not?

No, I don't mean discussions of TV shows and movies about a zombie apocalypse.  I mean when someone posts to a thread that has been dormant for an extended period, months, say, or even years.

Personally, I don't mind it, when someone posts to a thread that no one has looked at for a long time, but others seem to be bothered by it.  So, does it bother you, or not, and why or why not?

A related point-some forums I belong too have a feature that can be configured to warn a poster that the thread he is posting to, hasn't had a new post in whatever time interval.  If it's such a big deal and we want to discourage people from reviving old threads, maybe Kalmbach should put a developer on it.

Best regards,

Brad
