Anybody into ham radio here?
Posted by dirkpitt77 on Monday, June 13, 2016 9:06 PM

I need to be able to communicate between two locations 30 miles apart in an urban/suburban setting (home and work) without being dependent on cell or landline service. Whatever I get needs to be either hand portable or able to be installed in a car. CB radio is out because it doesn't have the range, although the CB radio in my Jeep does have SSB capability. So I'm looking at a ham radio or SSB radio setup. I live north of Seattle and I'm looking to add to my disaster prep gear. Anyone here got some expertise in this field and can get me started with some advice? I'm about to buy a study guide so I can get ham licensed.

Thanks!

Chris

I was into it many years ago in Europe. I don't have a licence in Canada because I live in a townhouse and they don't allow instalations of antenas etc. Kenwood and Yaesu make great gear but you best option is to check with a local ham radio club.

Cheers...

Check out Amateur Electronics in Milwaukee, Wi.

http://www.aesham.com/our-locations/aes-milwaukee/

Get their catalog and be amazed and confused.  They have everything.

I got my license in 1958 and it is still current, although I have been off the air for many years and am out of touch with current technology.  I got sick of it when ham radio morphed into computer technology.

ARRL publishes many tutorial books.  Find a local ham club and you will find many helpful guys who will be glad to advise you.
