I think it would be nice if you could donate the items. That way people could actually see them and learn about that event, and what it meant for our country, japan,  frankly the whole world, for many years after. That way they could be kept in an environment that will preserve them, in a controlled environment for future generations. If donated, I would ask that they mention the original owner's name, and that it be made in his memory.

If you are looking to donate them, you might contact the Asia/Pacific Museum in Fredricksburg, TX (formerly the Nimitz Museum).  They would probably be very interested in the items.

Whatever Revenant... The fact of the matter is, he has a photo, you don't.

You don't know what I have.  In fact, you don't know what he has either.

I've noticed over time that you have a habit of tryping to bait certain people in the Forum with posts like this...please try to be more respectful.  I'm entitled to my opinion and thoughts just like everyone else...

...I don't believe it, with all due respect.  The pictures would be property of the US Govt...Anyone can say anything...

I'd hold onto all of them if it were me. Too much history and very few rare such as the Nagasaki photo survive. The Smithsonian in D.C. might be a better place to donate or sell to them. You've got something really special in your possession.

It''s not the Hiroshima mushroom cloud. it's Nagasaki. My friend told me that only members of his outfit got a print of the photo...not the news media

I seriously doubt there's an original, unpublished pic of the Hiroshima bombing...unless you have the negative too there are many more prints out there...

Rare World War II photo, map and flag

A long time friend of mine served in an  Air Force photo outfit in the South Pacific during World War II. A few years before he died he gave me some of the items from his collection. The photograph shows the mushroom cloud from the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. It was taken by one of the pilots in his squadron and has never been published. On the print it reads that it was taken at an altitude of 30,000 feet. The flag is a 16 by 10 inch silk American flag which  pilots carried. My friend said the pilots carried them so they could prove they were American if shot down. The other item is a 36 by 30 inch silk map of  Japan and South China seas. I have had these packed away for many years. i now have them in a fire proof safe.  Does anyone have any idea what these might be worth? We have a World War II museum about 30 miles from where I live. Should i donate them to the museum?
