Goldhammer - When I started this build, I had no idea about after-market items. It was only after doing some research on this kit that I stumbled across PE parts, CMK crew, etc. You're right - the PE deck really kicks up the detailing. I'm already using 'extra' parts for my USS CONSTITUTION build. Thanks and cheers!
I think the ship forum guys would like to see this thread too. Lots of sub builders there.
Nicely done. Have the same kit in the lineup for a build, but got the full "Big Ed" PE for her and the PE is daunting for it, especially the deck plates.
Nice build, just enough weathering. I like it very much, it is huge. Post it in the ships forum for a little more exposure.
"le plaisir delicieux et toujours nouveau d'une occupation inutile"
This was my first attempt at modeling since junior high and this was a great way to start. Yes, it's big but the scale is very easy to work with. I loved how Revell paid attention to detail in the molding of the parts. I did have to do a bit of puttying and sanding on both the hull and sail to close the seams. I built this kit without using any PE parts (which I learned existed after I started the build). I did purchase CMK's USS Gato class crew (guard with binoculars) as my lookouts on the sail. I drilled two engine exhaust ports, which were missing, into the hull. Instead of using the black thread provided with the kit, I chose to use a .011 gauge Super Slinky guitar string for my railings on deck. As the build progressed, I decided I'd also like to try my hand at 'weathering' the boat to give it that 'time at sea' look. I used a combination of graphite dust, oil pastel and waterpaint to add the exhaust, rust and salt spray effects.
